The firetower at the summit of Cardigan Mountain is 43 degrees 64 minutes 95.4 seconds N 71 degrees 54 minutes 51.2 seconds W In Orange NH. It is about 20 miles north of Kearsarge mountain. Maybe 4 miles west of Newfound lake. Close to 35 miles north and 5 miles west of hopkinton N.H.
What is Cardigan Mountain like?
Cardigan Mountain has a lot of crumbling rock walls since it used to be farmland. It also has a rusted old car and a weird structure that was connected to wheels that my group visited. The car was there because the engine was needed to power a chair lift for a ski slope, the wheel thing was going to be a bunch of pulleys for the chair lift. the ski slope was never built so everything fell into disrepair. You can even find abandoned cellar holes from when the farmers were at Cardigan.
The summit of Cardigan is a bare-rock summit meaning it is only rock on the summit. There are two stories why, one is that a person accidentally or on purpose started a fire and the greenery on the top of Cardigan was destroyed. The other story is that a lightning strike started the fire. A few miles away and about a few thousand feet lower there is a place called welton falls that has carved out a small gorge/canyon since over time it has eroded and formed a small canyon.
Our group was there for Day one and then on Day two and finally on Day three.
