Cardigan Mountain Trip, Day 3

We stepped off the bus at the AMC lodge for the last time. It was only drizzling but the air was cold and the grass and dirt parking lot were soaked. We did not go on much of a hike today. We headed over to the small pond right by the lodge and huddled under a tarp hung in the air by trees. By now it was pouring rain, and despite the tarp, us and our backpacks were still soaking wet. Under the tarp we took a look at lot’s of laminated cards with tree attributes on them. Then we went over to sit under the awning of the lodge to eat our lunch.

Then we had a tree auction and with our teams, we created our own tree. While doing this, we found a butterfly emerging from a cocoon on the ledge of the awning. After that, we took a short walk over to a field where we learned to use a compass, and had a scavenger hunt. We walked up a large hill and learned about sugar maple leaves. Then we walked farther up the hill and found an abandoned car and old ski lift. Then we sprinted down the hill and also found a ginormous ant hill, about 4 feet long. Then to end the day, we walked along a short trail, drawing some sketches, then Lia dropped her compass in the stream.

Cardigan Trip, Day 3 Theme - Human Environment Interaction

Our third day at cardigan was just rain, rain, rain. And by the end of the day, us and all our belongings were sopping wet. Which shows how the environment really affects the life of us humans. We had to be flexible and adjust our activities throughout the day because of the weather conditions. Though the rain was not the only thing that expressed human environment interaction on this day. The rain slowed toward the end of the day and we learned to use a compass. Compasses keep us from getting lost in the woods, which again, is humans interacting with nature. In additon to that, we were also walking on the trails carved by people. So being there at all is supporting the existence of humans affecting nature.
