Where is Cardigan?
Our seventh grade traveled to the AMC lodge in Alexandria, NH in September of 2021. On all three of the days we stayed in the general area of the AMC lodge, which is near Cardigan Mountain. The latitude and longitude of the lodge is, N 43 degrees 38 minutes 59.1 seconds, W o71 degrees 52 minutes 39.o seconds at 1,392 feet in elevation.
AMC lodge is near Cardigan Mountain. From the summit of Cardigan you can also see Mt. Monadnock, Camels Hump, and Pleasant Mountain. Also, if you travel a few miles northwest of the lodge you will reach Welton Falls NH. AMC Lodge is 45 miles north from Hopkinton NH. This is where the HMHS seventh grade went from AMC lodge and the Cardigan area. Newfoundlake is also 18 miles east of the lodge.
What is Cardigan like?
Alexandria NH, and the area of Cardigan mountain is really neat. From the top of Cardigan Mountain, you can see other mountains, such as Mt. Monadnock, the White Mountains, Camels Hump, Pleasant Mountain, Firescrew, and of course Cardigan. At the summit of Firescrew, there is a big rock ledge, view area. All throughout this area there is lichen and moss growing on the big rocks. The day we hiked Firescrew Mountain, the weather was wet and rainy, but we still had a pretty good view of the surrounding land. Since the weather was so wet, there were mushrooms everywhere. We saw many birds and butterflies throughout our day.
On top of Firescrew, there are signposts, cairns, and trails made to help you find your way. From the Firescrew summit, you can look over and see the summit of Cardigan and the firetower on top of it. AMC lodge is located directly next to Firescrew mountain and is a big building with solar panels and a metal roof. At AMC lodge, there is an old rusty car. This car was brought many years ago to this hill. It was brought up so that the engine could be used to power a ski lift. Overall, Alexandria NH and AMC lodge are a really interesting place to visit, with lots of amazing mountains.
Our trip happened over three days, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
