Where is Mt. Cardigan?
43 miles north beyond the Bristol and Alexandria back roads, are the coordinates N 43 degrees38,58.9 W 071 degrees 52 ,38.3. Or known as Mt. Cardigan, either the bald actual mountain top, or a mile away the peaceful delegate life at Firescrew is connected by the vast series of trails and camps. Spanning thousands of feet, through the way are ponds, plants, streams and critters. At the center of these trails is the amc lodge, the hivemind divided by Alexendria 10 miles away, and Orange about five miles away. 22 miles away a Cardigan shop, 41 miles away an orchard, 4 miles away a state forest, and newfound lake 11 miles away. Between those distances are small houses popping up every now and then. This is where Mt. Cardigan is.
Mt.Cardigan is home to the new and young beech trees, hobble bushes, and striped maple. The curving streams flow in between the trails. The Welton falls waterfall crashing down to the shallow rocks. And the fragile peaceful life at the top of Mt.Firescrew. And none at the bald top of Cardigan. The glacial erratic sitting alone, covered in lichen. The vast roots on the way to Firescrew. Some days are even warm, others are storming.
But there is another theme of geography, Cultural. Mt.Cardigan is a mountain divided by two towns, the town of Orange and Alexandria. The lodge is the center of trails cleared out. Marked with blazes and stacked stones leading the way. On the way to the top of these trails, the old building sellers lay dormant. At the top is a fire tower, making sure the fires that happened before does not happen again. The abandoned car that once powered the ski slope now rusted away. And advanced solar panels slowly charge the lodge.
We were there for three days, Sunday day one , Monday day two, and Tuesday day three. september 19th-21st.
