First we got on two different busses and were very quiet the whole way there. When we got off the bus we walked in a single file line over to the picnic tables and got instructions from Mr. W. Then we all went tidepooling with our friends and found some pretty cool things like crabs, starfish, cool rocks, and barnicles. A lot of us went up for lunch at about 11:00 and checked in with a teacher. Then we went down to see the drowned forrest, but went back up to play some feild games after. After all the games and walking around we got back on our busses and chatted with our peers very very quietly. Finally we went to Jhonsons Dairy Bar and got some giant ice cream bowls.
Tides are caused by the gravitational forces from the moon. There is a big bulge of water that bulges out of one side of the earth that bulges on the opposite side of the Earth every 12 hours. When the bulge is big on one side then that side has high tide. When the bulge goes to the other side than the first side has low tide.
BLACK ZONE: The black zone AKA the splash zone is at the way top of all the others. It only gets a little splash of water every 12 hours when there is high tide. An organism that lives in the black zone is cyanobacteria. This organism is very fastinating because it can live a whole 12 hours without having any contact with water. It is called the black zone because cyanobacteria is black and it covers the rocks in the black zone.
WHITE ZONE: The white zone is right below the black zone. It is called the white zone because it has little white spots on all of the rocks. These white spots are barnacles clinging to the rocks. The barnacles are all glued there until the day they die and cripple. The reason they are glued there is becuase when they were little, they all came across their own beautiful rock and decided to be stuck to it for the rest of their lives. Some barnacles stick to wales and get to see more of the world but still can never move to a different neighborhood.
BROWN ZONE: The brown zone is right below the white zone. It is called the brown zone because it is completely covered in greenish brown seaweed. Two of the most common seaweeds in the brown zone are Rockweed and Knotted Wrack. Rockweed has rounded tips and Knotted Wrack had pointed tips. They both have little air bubbles in the branch like things, the air bubbles are very fun to pop.The air bubble are there so the weed can float but the holdfast keeps it from floating away.a It is very hard to walk on the brown zone because it is so slippery.
RED ZONE: The red zone is at the way bottom before there is just water and the depths of the ocean. The red zone is where you can find most creatures like Starfish, lobsters, and crabs. The red zone also has a ton of irish moss. Irish moss looks a lot like a broccoli bunch but a normally red in the tide pool area
Some cool things that I found were crabs, starfish, and sea urchins. One of the crabs I found was absolutely giant but it was dead. One of my peers found a sea star that was sorta pinkish but I saw its stomach hole that was pretty cool. I also saw a lot of barnacles in the white zone, they were a lot smaller than I expected. Most of what i saw was a ton of Rockweed and Knotted Wrack, it was everywhere in the brown zone. When I went up to our little tank of findings I saw two little lobstas along with a lot of other cool creatures. Overall, the coolest thing I saw was the Sea Star, it was very very cool.
The zone that I think has the most variety is the red zone. I think this because there are a ton of different creatures and organisms that we found there. We found a ton of things like barnacles, sea urchins, starfish, snails, lobstas, crabs, seaweed, and bacterias. I think that there is such a big variety of organisms in the red zone because there is a lot more space ( less giant rocks everywhere) and water. This is a lot more helpful to these creatures because they have a lot more space to move around, hide, and have the constant water they need to survive.
