Blue Group (D1B1)
Day 1 (movement)
The first day of our trip (October 2nd) started with our long 1 ˝ hour-long bus ride up to Cardigan mountain. We were greeted kindly with a warm welcome coming from the AMC workers. They had us play team-building fun games out on the front lawn.
After about a half-hour of games, we were shown to our rooms and were told to get packed with the 5 essentials: water, an extra layer, food, rain gear, hiking boots. After getting together with our groups we set out to start our movement to Welton Falls, on our way to Welton falls. This was about a four-mile hike taking us most of the day, due to nature appreciation and sketching. We all had jobs. One might be the navigator, or the motivator, or the water breaker, the leader, and even the snack master.
In our first mile, we realized that we were going to have to make up a name for our group. Due to the ripping of my rain pants, and the fact that everyone in our group went to Hopkinton Middle High School, we named our selves the one-legged trail hawks. We hiked for a long time, due to many waters, snacks, and nature appreciation breaks. We were careful about our trash, trying to minimize or eliminate the amount of trash that was on the trail.
The trail had very minimal trash on it, but we made sure to still look to pick up trash if it was found. But finally, we finished our movement to marvelous Welton falls. Soon after that we saw a monarch butterfly moving to Mexico. It was a sight to see but after a couple of minutes, but we were running a little late, and had to start heading back. The way back went way faster than the way up. After reaching the end of the trail back to the AMC lodge we had one hour of free time to play a board game, rest, or even take a shower.
After a very fast hour, we had dinner. The tables were already set by one of the other groups. The dinner was excellent! We had lasagna, bread, and salad. We were told to try to limit the waste of our food as much as possible. This was an example of movement in ideas. What we didn’t know was that they would weigh the waste and see how we did compared to the other sessions that went before us. We had about ˝ a pound of total waste, which blew the other session out of the water. We had about a pound less than they did. After that, we were sent back to our groups for the “night walk”. We all went out with our groups to walk the trails at night with no light of any sort.
After a while, we sat down and tried to guess the colors of crayons that she passed out. After a little bit, we walked back to the lodge. Once we were on the front lawn we were told a story about the stars. After a long day, we headed inside to go to sleep in our rooms.
