Location

We recently went on a field trip to Mount Cardigan. On the second day we reached the summit of the mountain. There is a firetower at the very top of the mountain. The location of that firetower is N 43º 38’ 58’’ and W 071º 54’ 51’’ the elevation is 3,157 ft above sea level. The firetower is also right on the border between the towns of Alexandria, New Hampshire, and Orange, New Hampshire. It is also north of where we live in Hopkinton New Hampshire. And west of Newfound lake which is surrounded by Bristol NH, Alexandria NH, Hebron NH, and Bridgewater NH.

Place

Cultural

On the top of Cardigan mountain it is a bear rock summit because humans burned the forest down from being afraid the wolves would attack the hikers. Also humans would spray paint the trees going up the trail. They would do this so that you know which way to go and so you don’t get lost. The spray painters would also spray the rock so that you know where to go on the bear rock summit. At the base of the mountain there is a lodge. This lodge can hold over 30 people. Also the solar panels outside provide more than enough power to keep it running all year.

Physical

On the trails of Cardigan mountain you are surrounded by Evergreen and Deciduous forests. Evergreen forests are forests that stay green all year-round. Deciduous forests have trees that drop their leaves in the fall. Evergreen trees consist of Pines, Hemlocks, Spruce and Cedar. Evergreen forests make the ground very acidic so that it’s hard for other plants and trees to grow. Deciduous consist of Maple, Ash, Oak, ect… Also towards the top the trees get smaller as you get higher. They do this because they don’t need to get as high to get sun.

We were there for three days October 2 to October 4. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. On Thursday we took our big hike up Cardigan mountain.
