Region, in geography, is a lot like place. It is, according to the National Geographic Society, “an area of land that has common features.” The land that the AMC owns is kind of like a region. On some maps, there are borders to mark where the end of their ownership of the land is. Sometimes, the borders marking regions become hard to define. For example, maybe a tree is very wide or the roots stretch really far and cross the border of a region. That’s when it gets harder to strictly define region.
Cardigan and Firescrew can be examples of region, because mountains are kind of just a region of elevated or rocky ground. The lodge can also be a region because its defining features are that it's made of wood and houses people. Another way the AMC's land and hiking trails are regions is because it's important in a human/cultural way. People go there to hike and experience nature.
