Day 2
Region
The second day was mountain day. Everyone woke up to steaming hot cocoa, ate a large and filling breakfast, packed their hiking backpacks, and gathered into our normal hiking groups. Each group decided what trails they wanted to take, and my group picked Manning trail that led to Mount Firescrew, over to Mount Cardigan, and Holt trail to go back to the lodge. The whole hike was about 6-7 miles, according to our instructor.
We started off up the trail, coming across large streams, steep rock inclines, and cliffs. At one cliff, we stopped to take a break and eat lunch from hiking for almost 3 hours. In no time, we reached a very rare thing in NH, which is the Alpine Bog. We stopped to sketch the bog, then continued to the top of Firescrew. From Firescrew, we could see Mount Cardigan right next to it. After more hiking, we reached the highlight of the trip, located between Orange and Alexandria New Hampshire, Mount Cardigan. Soon enough, the whole session was on top of the mountain, forming into a large group for a picture. Most of the groups, including my group, stayed on top of the mountain to sketch and take a rest.
When we were heading down to the lodge, there were some more very steep inclines, so most of the group, and im not making this up, slid down the path on backpacks, like they were sledding. At one point, we came across a path to the high cabin, so we decided as a group to check it out. It was not anything fancy or exciting, just a plain old cabin.
After an hour or two, we reached an cool old bridge that was above a river. Then we reached the sign that said AMC Lodge 1.7 miles, and it was a relief, as all our feet were aching. After reaching the lodge, we had Taco Tuesday but on a Thursday. Then we had a big bonfire were we did skits, and then off to bed for the last day of our trip.
