The first day started with everyone within session 2 gathering on the bus, and we transported from HMHS in Hopkinton, NH to the AMC Cardigan Lodge in Alexandria, NH. After lugging all our luggage into our bunk rooms, everyone was sorted into hiking groups. Since it was the first day, the hike was short. My group did the Back 80 Trail, which was 2 miles in total, so it was fairly short. We crossed many streams, sketched cellar holes, admired a giant white quartz, and found a small salamander. We also came across a banana slug, and our instructor informed us that to scare off predators it had a protective layer of goo that made the predators mouth numb. To show us, he strangely licked it, and his tongue went numb. Then, even stranger, he licked it again so someone could take a picture. After the hike, everyone had free time, dinner, and then it was off to bed as a long hike was awaiting us the next day.
