On day 3...
After day 2's toe ordeal, I was not looking forward to the next day. Well, I was actually looking forward to leaving this place, which was today. After breakfast, we got ready for our hike to Welton Falls. Luckily, I was able to acquire some bigger hiking boots from the friendly Mr. Woolner. (Mr. Woolner was also hiking with us today.) After a bit of waiting, it was finally time to leave on our hike! We got about 10 feet before we stopped. So apparently, there was this really rare tree. Despite Mr. Woolner saying that we might want to sketch it/write about it somewhere, I didn't really take much note of it. 10 seconds later, we stopped to sketch another thing, which was actually interesting: it was this old cellar hole. Also somewhere along the lines, we all heard this cool story about why hemlock trees have their "heads hung low". (I forgot the real term for it.) Plus, there was a small conversation about ash trees which I have recently forgotten. After many sketches and a couple other things, we finally got near the waterfall. Let me tell you quickly: I am deathly afraid of heights. Now, this final stretch to the waterfall was not exactly... flat. I was walking on a 5 foot- patch of land, and it was definitely not pleasant for my sense of sight. I was... mildly terrified. Did I mention it was raining? Yeah, it was semi-slippery, too. But, nevertheless, I was fine. We then got to behold Welton Falls, and we even went down to the basin and sat down on a small patch of rock. Well, by now, I was cold, wet, miserable, and also pretty bored. But soon, we were moving on our way back. After a few more stops to sketch, we finally got to the lodge.
We packed, and then we were on our way. Plus, this was kind of my first mountain hiking experience, so I got an idea about what this type of hiking was like. Mostly grueling walks and infrequent stops because everyone else had more endurance than I did at the time. Sounds like fun. And so, all of us moved (<-theme hint) on back to Hopkinton. (ALONG WITH MY LUGGAGE AND IDEA, TOO.)
People, things, and ideas always seem to move (<-theme hint) in accordance to my schoolbound wishes.
Overall, I would not say this trip was a colossal waste of time. In truth, it was great, because I got some fun geography classes because of this trip that I have been documenting over these past days. Making a website? What's not to like.
Here are some sketches I made on day 3:
