The second day at Mt. Cardigan started with me sitting up right and hitting my head on a vent. After this first event I went downstairs to eat a breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, french toast and hot chocolate. When breakfast was over we headed upstairs to bundle up and prepare for a full day of hiking and sketching Mt. Cardigan and Mt. Firescrew. After I was done I headed out to our groups meeting place, (a rock in the front of Cardigan lodge). When we had all of our group we went and got the snack tray labeled Andy and divvied up the snacks in to peoples bags. We then went and got the sandwich tray and got everybody their sandwich that they had requested the day before. After everything had been split up and passed out we were off.
The first sketch that we did wasn't to far from the beginning of the trail. It was of a leaf from a birch tree. The more memorable sketches between lunch and the start of the hike were of old cellars, the first Biodiversity line transect and of a quartz rock with bullseye lichen and an abandoned mud dauber nest. When we found the quartz rock and sketched it we decided to eat lunch there. For lunch I had a turkey, tomato, lettuce and whole grain bread. Along with the sandwich I had an apple. All throughout the hike we would stop and have a group snack. The more memorable sketches of Mt. Firescrew and Mt. Cardigan between lunch and the time that we summited Mt. Cardigan were the alpine bog, biodiversity line transect 2, and the firetower at the top of Mt. Cardigan.
The fire tower at the top of Mt. Cardigan was a great example of something called Human/Environment Interactions or for short HEI. HEI is how humans affect the environment and how the environment affects humans. The fire tower is a good example of HEI because it shows how the humans affected the environment by building a structure on top of a beautiful natural place, (the peak of Mt. Cardigan). The more memorable sketches from on the way down the mountain were, a little tree looking out towards a mountain range and a plant called dragon plantain.
When we arrived at Cardigan lodge we were an hour late because my group had a little trouble getting down the mountain. This meant that we missed the entire free time and didn't even have time to shower. We ate a dinner of hamburgers and hot dogs with salad and chips within 15 minutes of arriving back at the lodge. After dinner we had an evening activity of performing three skits to everybody. All of the skits had to do with either the hike or our environmental instructor. We performed these skits in the back field at the campfire. At the beginning of the evening activity everybody was given 1 double stuffed oreo. After we were done with the skits we went back into the lodge and had a 10 minute period of time to shower. After this Mr. Woolner read us an evening story and we were off to bed and day 2 had ended.
