On Day Two at Cardigan, we went on a hike up Mount Firescrew and Mount Cardigan. On our way up Firescrew, we went through the three regions of a mounton, the Hardwood, then the Boreal, and then the Alpine. The Hardwood zone was the lowest part of the mountain. There were a few trees that were native to our individual zone and did not grow anywhere else on the mountain. Next was the Boreal zone. There were fewer trees than in the Hardwood zone, bt enough to make someone think they were in a forest and not hiking up a mountain. As we climbed higher, the soil gave way to rock and we knew we had entered the Alpine zone. There were only a few trees, and we knew we were near the top of the mountain. There were many open areas were we could see the clear sky and the ground far below us. We reached the top of Firescrew and then hiked over to Cardigan, and back to the lodge. That night we had a campfire.
