Tidal Zones

The black or splash zone is the first intertidal zone, the areas between tide zones. It is called the black zone becuase of the cyanobacteria that lives there. It is also called the splash zone, because it will be dry for 12 hours between tides before it is splashed again. The white zone is the second intertidal zone. It is named for the barnacles that coat the rocks.
