Cardigan mountain is located about an hour away from Hopkinton NH in Orange NH. Orange NH is right in between Canaan and Alexandria. The AMC lodge is about 3 hours and 41 minutes worth of walking to Cardigan Mountain. The absolute location of Cardigan mountain is 43.6498 N ,71.9148 W We woke up around 6 o'clock in the morning and began our morning routines. Showering, getting dressed and of course breakfast. Our day started with Mountain Cardigan. We saw rivers and streams, trees and plants and animals. And as we approached the cleared top we actually got to go inside of the firetower! The scenery was breathtaking and the view of the autumn New Hampshire leaves was perfect. Next thing you know we are hiking Firescrew and then South peak. Indian cucumbers were everywhere and we also discovered some cranberries. We also saw fish in the streams and I'm sure took loads of pictures.
Although I was not able to attend the trip with the help of Google Earth and the class's description I can tell that Cardigan was a very special and trip and a beautiful place to hike. Whether it was visting Welton Falls (which I looked up online and looks amazing) or going into the fire tower on Firescrew the scenery was breathtaking. Also on top of Firescrew you could see windmills in the distance. Of course trees such as beech and hemlock could be seen but also Indian cucumbers were all over and some groups found edible berries. The forest floor was described as"spongy". I can image the leaves being colorful and vibrant, knowing how beautiful New Hampshire is in Autumn.Being more specific about the weather, for the first two days it was chilly, rainy and not exactly gloomy but definitely "sweater weather" and on Friday they had to pull out their rain gear.
Although the physical geography part of the trip was alluring the cultural geography section was also equally impressive. You saw old stone walls, cellar holes and of course camp sites. You could also so the trail markers which must of been helpful for a bunch of kids who have never hiked the trails before. I was told that the food was great too. On day one for dinner we had spaghetti and on the second day we had tacos. As for lunches we were to pack a sandwich, granola bar, fruit and cookie and lots of water! Then there was the AMC lodge that we stayed at. I was told by some people that bunking with their friends was actually one of their favorite parts.
Our session was there on Wednsday,Thurday and Friday.
