Day 1 at Cardigan

Day one at Cardigan was very interesting, and slightly scary. First we rode a bus from the high school to the Cardigan lodge with all of the kids from the first session. We put all of our luggage in Mr. Woolner trailer. When we arrived at the Lodge, we were greeted by the AMC guides for our session and we played lots different versions of rock paper scissors with our whole group. After that, all of the gear and luggage had been unloaded, so we went up to our bunk rooms to unpack. I bunked with Ava R, Clara, Ellie, and Harriet. We actually ended up keeping our room relatively clean for the first day or so. After this, we found our group leaders and got hiking. My group did a short loop and visited the beaver ponds. We did lots of sketching with Mr. Woolner. We found lots of cool stuff, like and old cellar hole with a geocache inside, a snake!, and hobble bush and the story of its name. Throughout the day, my group was nervous that we would not be back in time for our free time, but we actually ended up getting there early!

When I got back, I took off my hiking boots, then ran upstairs to take a shower before they were all taken. I spent my free time organising my things and talking with my bunkmates. Before long, It was time for dinner! We had delicious tacos with brownies for dessert. We then went upstairs to change for the night hike. It was chilly out so I wore my fuzzy sheep pajamas and a coat. The night hike was definitely the highlight of day one. We practiced calling in owls, played a owl hearing game with blindfolds, and just looked up at the stars. It was very fun, but also scary because we were in the dark in the woods, vulnerable to any wild animal that was looking for a midnight snack. We went into a field and it was actually very bright, with the streams of moonlight. After the night hike, we listened to Mr. Woolner read a blackbeard story which was actually very interesting. I then went up to the girls floor to get ready for bed. My bunkroom was sooo tired from our busy day out hiking, we all literally fell fast asleep in the blink of an eye.

My day involved lots of one of the five themes of geography: movement! Examples of this are:

-My AMC guide moved here from Minnesota over the summer

-The movement of my luggage from home all the way to the Cardigan Lodge.

-The movement of kids on a bus from The high school to Cardigan Lodge

-The movement of my group on the trails

-The movement of the food we ate - farm, grocery store, lodge, kitchen, stomach, toilet: the cycle is endless

-The movement of the idea of ORT

-The movement of ideas - the games we played on day one
