Christopher Columbus arrived at the Cuban Islands. He believed that he was near China in the Indies, therefore, he named the natives Indians. He did not discover any gold or silver on the first few days. However he did discover many things in this new land, including new foods to eat, plants to smoke, and new and inventive furniture. For example, he discovered that the native's ate corn, which he described as quite a lot like wheat or barley. He also discovered the natives use of hammocks, which he believed would cause fewer people to die because they would no longer be sleeping on the floor. It is unkown weither or not Columbus had seen cotton before.

Hammocks

Christopher Columbus discovered natives sleeping in hanging beds.

Corn

Columbus found strange food which was quite important in the natives diet. He described it as similiar to barley or other wheats

Native people

Native people were discovered by Columbus and the other crew members. He discribed them as wearing little to no clothes and having dark skin. He found them initially on the Bahamas but later found a different group of natives on both the islands of Cuba and Haiti/Dominican Republic.

Sweet potatoes

Many were found by Columbus in the first few day on the Bahamas. Regualar Potatos were not found until much later.

Royal palms

They were nothing like anything Columbus had seen before. He seen palm trees before but they were far different then the ones that he was experiencing in the Bahamas. Suprisingly

Yuco

Yuco is a type of woody shrub that Columbus discribed as being an important part of the carribean diet

Tobacc

Tobacco is a prized possesion of the Carribean people Columbus received quite a lot of tobacco while in the Americas. He said that they were in a bad habit of alway smoking Tobacco.
