They are planning to prove that the Earth is smaller than once thought and that there is a short cut to get to the exotic and rich Asia. The short cut that they are planning to prove starts in Palos spain and gos to the vaguely known islands off the coast of Asia. The reason why they want to risk everything to to go out into completely umapped ocean is because Asia is full of richs they plan to bring back and sell for an unbeleivable amount of money. Also, if Columbus turns out to be right he will become famous and people will want to sponsor more of his expeditions.
