Day 3- Regions

Day three dawned as the clouds parted around Cardigan mountain. Today we would explore the river region that included Welton Falls and Clark's Brook. Only 7 minutes into the hike we reached the ruins of an old cellar that once belonged to the people who ran the Lodge. We found lots of moss and a few bricks. It was a very moist region because there was lots of moss. The path would go up and down every few meters which made us very tired. The path drew close to a steep drop where lots of trees were falling down and roots were hanging in thin air. Fern explained that Hurricane Irene had struck this region and ripped lots of trees up. Farther down the path we were allowed to play on the huge boulders that were strewn all over the river. We did a drawing here of the river and I drew some moss that was on a rock.

After some time the path just stopped. We asked Fern what to do and she said that the path continued on the other side of the river. So with a hop skip and a jump we crossed the river. The rest of the hike to Welton Falls seemed like a flash and before we knew it, we had arrived! It was the most spectacular thing ever. The cliffs were huge and towering and there were caverns and dips. Everything, other than the trees and the water, was rock! Below the water, the rock curved and inverted itself. It was the clearest, and coldest water ever. Fern led us up to the top of the waterfall where we entered a cave overlooking the waterfall which was really cool but way too high up for my comfort zone. Before we knew it, we had hiked back to the lodge and were being shoved onto the bus for a bumpy ride home. We were at Cardigan for three days from the 28th to the 30th. On Wednesday we arrived and got settled on Thursday we went on the big hike and on Friday we went to Welton Falls.
