Day 1- Human Environment Interaction: On Day 1 we arrived at the Cardigan AMC Lodge and got settled in our bunkrooms. It felt like two seconds before we were herded into our groups. I got put in Fern's group and it was so much fun. Because of the cold environment at Cardigan, we had to wear lots of warm clothing and sturdy boots to protect our feet. We went on a short hike on the surrounding trail. We hiked a bit on the Manning Trail. Every so often we would have to walk over fallen down trees or man made streams. These, Fern explained, were done by the Trail managers who made sure that the trails were easy for us to hike on. Fern pointed out a Yellow Birch and started rummaging in her pack for a rope to pull a branch down with. A fellow group member (who shall stay anonymous) leaped up in the air and caught the branch before rope was even needed. Then, Fern cut little pieces of the branch for us to fray and then brush our teeth with. To our amazement, we found that it tasted like Spearmint. Cutting the tree is an example of Human Environment Interaction.

After about an hour and a half of hiking we reached a circle of birch stumps that had been placed there by the trail managers. Fern halted the group and told us that whenever you are in a circle of birches you have to sing the Chickadee song and call out the chickadee cry. The chickadee song soon became very annoying for the rest of the group because my friends and I would sing it constantly, making up harmonies to pair with it. We learned about the tree species in the area and she showed us which ones had been planted and which ones were there naturally. This is another example of Human Environment interaction. We reached a gushing river and crossed a bridge to get over it. One of the members of our group found two salamanders there and wanted to keep one but that would've hurt it and the environment and our rule was Leave No Trace. We saw a Jobox that campers had put their food in so that bears and other animals would not be attracted and want to eat foods that could hurt their body. At the end of the day we went on a night hike and it was really scary not being able to see where you were going!
