The sun hits the earth at the equator at all times, this is why the equator is the hottest place on earth. The earths tilt also implies that the poles get the coldest because they have the most indirect sunlight. So thus concluding the areas with the most direct sunlight get the warmest and the places with the most indirect sunlight get the coldest.
