Location

The absolute location of Mount Cardigan AMC lodge is North 43 38.977 seconds W071 54.860 seconds. The lodge is about three miles west of Mount Cardigan. It is in the town of Alexandria, NH in the United States of America. It is also located in Cardigan Mountain State Forest. Not too far from Newfound Lake. It is also in Grafton Country, which is about 45 miles, or an hour drive from here heading North. To the North of the AMC lodge is Dorchester and Gorton. To the West is Orange Mountain and the town of Canaan. To the South is Grafton. Finally, to the East is Newfound Lake, the town of Bridgewater, and Welton Falls State Forest, home of Welton Falls.

Place

The physical things at Mount Cardigan include a bare rock summit with hundreds of crisscrossing black and white rock lines. Theres only a few short trees near the summit, not much taller than an average human. Mica glints in many of the rocks. Welton Falls, only around five miles from Mount Cardigan, is a gushing, river running over smoothed, eroded rocks. A broken lead wire fence bends hazardly over the edge of the rocky, muddy cliff. In the rocks on the far side of the river unseen caves are hidden under the boulders. Fungi and moss grows in the moist air on the sides of the small caves.

At cardigan, the cultural geography includes the AMC (Appalation Mountain Club) staff creating games for us kids. In the kitchen, the cooks prepare food for us that we will eat in the dining hall. The AMC staff explains ort to us, a made of word for food waste that they ended up using at the lodge. From the top of Mount Cardigan the AMC lodge can be seen, just a tiny speck in the green landscape. Windmills on the hills can also be seen from the summit. All down the lumpy, steep side of the summit cairns sit, ready to topple over from the immense wind. The small, metal fire tower looms over the rock below.

We were at Cardigan for three long days and two nights. Sunday the 25 we hiked the Manning trail. Monday the 26 we hiked Cardigan Mountain. And on Tuesday the 27, we hiked to Welton Falls again.
