Day 2 had been the day I had been waiting for out of all three: The day of the big hike on both Mount Cardigan and Firescrew. When we woke up, we were told to put all of our hiking gear on so we were ready for the long trip, and then we went down for a breakfast of bacon and eggs. After breakfast, every hiking group was called up one by one to make a lunch that we would eat on the trail. After all of the lunches were made, everyone gathered in their groups to decide which mountains they were hiking, and discuss jobs and equipment. Before my group headed out, we did a short activity and tried to guess what the summit of each mountain would look like. Finally, it was time to set out on the trail, and we hiked over many long, steep routes. While climbing up, we stopped to sketch many on the things we saw on the trails, and ate a snack we packed at the beginning of the day. We saw many different trees, crossed a bridge, and even came across Bailey Brook, a big stream flowing across the paths. When our group finally broke through the trees to the summit, the view was breathtaking, and one of the best mountain views I had ever seen. The sky was perfectly clear, and here and there fall foliage could be seen in the mountains around the summit. After having lunch at the top, my group headed back down the mountain, and up to the top of Firescrew. Although the view was beautiful, it could not compare to Cardigan's view. Although, something very special about the summit of Firescrew was the alpine bog on the top. Alpine bogs are very rare, and there are only three in New England! After traveling down the mountain, everyone went inside for dinner, and then back outside to gather around the campfire for stories and games. When it was finally time to go to bed, I was happy to rest my legs after the seven mile hike we had just done. I was sad our last day at Cardigan was tomorrow, but excited for the hike planned for that day. Day 2's theme of geography is region. Cardigan mountain is in the Dartmouth-Sunapee region, and is in New Hampshire.

Tuesday, Day 3.
