1. Reading Check on 214 - What formed the islands of the West Indies?

The West Indies are formed by volcanoes under the ocean. There are two types of Islands in the West Indies. One is the High Islands which was formed bye active Volcanos. Bye now though the Volcanos are now dormont. Also there are no minerals on these types of Islands. The second type of Island is the Low Islands. Low Islands are formed bye sand and high coral. On these Islands there are no minerals and good soil.

The major industries in the West Indies is tourism and farming. These warm temperatures bring tourists to the nice and sunny beaches. For farming the islands are made from volcanoes so volcanic islands have rich soil.

The first permanent European settlement was in Santo Domingo in 1496.

The three archipelagos that make up the West Indies are: Bahamas, Greater Antilles, and Lesser Antilles.

The four groups that have influenced the culture of the Caribbean region are Spaniards,English, French, and the Africans.

6. Government- How is Cuba different from every other country in the Western Hemisphere?

Cuba is different from every other country in the Western Hemisphere by Cuba is a communist state led by a dictator President Fidel Castro.
