Geography of Montserrat
The island of Montserrat is located in the lesser antilles. It is a high island, which means that under sea volcanoes form the island and built it up over time from eruptions. Three mountains are on the island their names are the Silver hills, the Centre hills, and the Soufriere hills.
History of Montserrat
As for most of the islands in the lesser and greater antilles it was discovered by columbus. But there was life before than on the island native americans arrived around 3000 bce they named the island Alliouagana (“Land of the Prickly Bush”). When columbus showed up no one was there. He was the one who named it “montserrat” after the abbey of montserrat in spain. It masculinized in 1632 by Irish Catholics from saint kitts who were sent by Sir Thomas Warner the governor of saint kitts. The settlers were attacked by the french and carib indians many times the french had control of the island in 1664 and 1667 but was regained by England with the treaty of breda. The island was attacked by the french again in 1782 and gained control but the island was returned to England in 1783 by the treaty of paris.

The island of Montserrat is a british overseas territory. The island has an area of about 40 square miles. In 1995 over 8,000 people fled during the eruption of a volcano. The only active volcano is on the south side of the island. The currency is east caribbean dollars. There is plenty of wonderful food as you walk down the beach. The common language is english. The one thing that is truly amazing is the Montserrat library which has over 300,000 books about the 14th and 15th century.
