They are actually just the top of a couple mountains. There is an underwater chain of these mountains and the mountains were formed from volcanoes. This is not the same way that Hawaii is formed. There is a hotspot under the tectonic plates. So now when the plates move over it, it creates a line of mountains on top of the plate. This is why the Hawaii is kind of in a line. These islands were formed on a subduction zone. One tectonic plate goes under another and it shoves the plate to the surface. There are two other types of islands. There are islands made from coral, (these are all of the Bahamas), and continental islands. Contitinental islands have the most resources and arable soil. Sand and coral islands barely have any thing on them because, they're made of sand and coral.
Tourism is the major industry of the West Indies. Many tourists come to the caribbean for vacatation. The islands are beautiful with tropical weather and amazing sights. However Cuba does not let americans in. No until a recent law that allowed people to go through if they were not tourists. Only journalists and what not are allowed through.
Santo Domingo, which is the capital of the Dominican Republic. It is now currently the largest city in the country. Its population is around 2,908,000 people and it rose over 2 million people in the alst 7 years.
The Bahamas, Greater Antilles, and the Lesser Antilles. These island groups are all different. First off, the Bahamas are only sand and coral so they're not as easy to grow crops and things because it's just sand and coral. The Greater Antilles are only made up of continental islands so there are minerals, oils, good arable soil to grow crops and mountains. The Lesser Antilles are just small scattered islands. There are some sand and coral islands, continental islands and a lot of volcanic islands.
The Spanish, English, Dutch and French. The Dutch didn't really influence any of the culture that much, at least not as much as the French and the English and the Spanish. However they did take over a few islands such as the Indes Occidentales but it was mainly the Spanish and French. The Spanish were the first settlers from Europe so they got to a lot of the islands first. But due to fights and other things, different islands belong to different countries.
