1. Write down the main idea of the chapter "Climate" here.
Main (In my words)- To make varied climate, the wind and was carry rainfall, and sun warth
Main (From the book)- "Wind and water cary rainfall and the sun's warmth around the world to create different climates."
2. Reading Check Questions on 54- What is the difference between weather and climate?
Reading Check- Weather is the conditions in a short time. Weather changes depending where you are. It can be hot and rainy, or dry and hot. Even mild and rain/snow. Climate is the weather's average across a long period of time. The climate is different based off of where you live. At the equator, its very hot, but at the poles, it is ver cold. Climate isn't just one main "climate" it is from different regions
3. Applying Map Skills Question 1. In which general direction does the wind blow over North America?
The wind blows from the southwest over North America.
A little bonus about Ocean Gyre- In the Atlantic ocean, there is an ocean Gyre, the ocean current is like a cycle, it goes north up the East Coast, then east to Europe, south along West Africa, and back west to the East Coast. In the Pacific Ocean, there is another ocean gyre, it goes south along the West Coast, west to the Philippines north along Japan, and back east under the Alaskan islands. The ocean gyre is caused by the wind, it isn't wind itself.
4. Applying Map Skills Question 2. What winds did European sailers use to get to South America and the islands north of it?
Map Skills- The sailors used northeasterly winds to get to South America, and westerlie winds to get back. Sailors use these winds in their advantage, so they don't have to work as hard, the wind pushes the ship by the masts. The masts fill up with air and pushes the ship along.
5. Answer the Reading Check Question on page 55- How does the tilt of the Earth affect climate?
Reading Check- The tilt affects it because the sun hits the two different halves of the earth, each 1/4 of a year. When the rays are directly on one hemisphere, it's warm there A.K.A, Summer! It's winter in the hemisphere the the sun isn't directly on. But! Near the equator it's always either warm and rainy, or more of a mild climate all year round. (23 1/2 *N and 23 1/2 *S)
6. How does this relate to the Voyages of Columbus?
These "Hadley Winds" relate to Columbus's voyage becase he had to use some type of winds to get to South America and North to that like the Caribbean or the Florida Keys Columbus used Easterlie winds to get him to South America/ Caribbean and Westerlie winds to get him back to Spain. He needed to know what way the wind was blowing in order to figure out what route he sould take, he was a smart man. Columbus sailed south, down West Africa. And then went home, sailing north, and then back east. BUT!! For 9 days they experienced hardly any wind. He was right at 30* N, or right in between the two different directions the wind was blowing.
