Human Environment Interactions: Day 1

On the first day we got to Cardigan, we met with our group leaders and found out who was in our groups. We had 10 people in our group plus my dad. They were Ethan, Ben Bou, Steve, Brett, Kally, Sara, Anna L, Ashley C, Louise, and I. My dad was a chaperone and Fern was our leader. We played some games, like steal the bacon and a tag game like sharks and minnows as a whole or just with our groups. We had been told we had to bring our own lunches, so after we finished playing games we went inside and had lunch. I had chicken salad that my mom made, so did my dad. The chickens gave up their life and helped feed us, this is an example of human environment interactons, but we hurt the environment. When we finished lunch, we all went upstairs and got ready to go on a hike to either the Welton Falls or the Nature Trail. Our group did the Nature Trail the first day and on the last day we went to Welton falls.

When everyone was ready to go, we parted ways and went out on our own. We went up the Manning Trial to the Nature Trail. Mrs. Roberts went on the hike with us the first day. We hiked a bit up to where we made the leaf gradients. That is an example of Human Environment Interactions. We moved different color leaves into a gradient that looked like the rainbow. We were divided into two groups, Ben's and Jerry's I was a Jerry, and we did it a completely different was then the Ben's did theirs. We made a line of leaves and each leaf was a different shade lighter or darker. The Ben's put theirs in a more condensed area, they overlapped theirs but both of them were very cool. We hiked a bit more and then turned around and went down the mountain.

Because it had been raining the night before, the leaves were all very bright and they littered the path down in a very colorful good way. Because the leafs were scattered on the ground, it was hard to spot the Indian Cucumbers, but we did. I think that the Indian Cucumbers taste like dirt, or like beets. The cleared trails help people not get lost, and the crew at the AMC lodge help keep the trails clean of obstructions. Because people keep the trails clean, it is an example of humans changing the environment for the better or worse.

We had also gone to a small area where there was a little brook, and we saw some water bugs and Ethan almost caught a slimy black salamander.

Right before we were aloud to go into the AMC lodge, we sketched the pond or the lodge. I sketched the pond, which I now know was man made. Someone a long time ago had dug a hole and filled it with water. That is also an example of Human Environment Interactions. Because a human had dug the hole for the pond, salamanders and small aquatic animals could have life there. The aquatic plants could also have a place to live. Another thing I noticed was the apple trees. Fern told us that people planted them there and they had been there for a while. You could tell because they were pretty tall and they weren't very thin, they had a good sized trunk. The people planting the trees is an example of Human Environment Interactions, but the apple trees being planted there had help humans eat, and the environment had help humans.

When we finished sketching, we went inside and had free time, Mrs. Roberts, Noah, Katelyn and I started a game of the never ending Monopoly. It was pretty fun to play it but we had to stop so we could have dinner. The dinner the first night was tacos, and the lettuce, tomatoes, meat, etc, all had come from the environment to feed us. The fact that food came from the environment, means it is another representation of Human Environment Interactions. I had two raps that had meat, cheese, tomato sauce and sour cream in it. After dinner we went on a night hike. We walked blindfolded into the woods holding on to the person in front of us, Fern lead us without a blindfold on. It seemed like we walked miles when really we only walked a few hundred feet. It was so strange, and once we were done, we went back to the AMC lodge. Once back in the safe and warm AMC lodge, I took a shower and then came down and we listened to Mr. Woolner tell a story about a pirate named Blackbeard and his head that was turned into a cup. After him telling us the story, we all went upstairs and went to bed. My cabin talked a little bit and then we all fell asleep. That was the end of day 1.
