Mt. Cardigan is located in Alexandria, NH, as well as Orange, NH. It just so happens that it is right on the border of both towns. It is right near Firescrew Mountain and it is fairly close to Newfound Lake. The direct coordinates of the summit of Cardigan are, N43 degrees 38minutes 58.63seconds and W71 degrees 54minutes 52.07seconds. The elevation of the summit is 3142 ft. The AMC lodge was right below both Firescrew and Cardigan, and Welton Falls were a bit farther away for both mountains and the AMC lodge. The coordinates of the AMC lodge are N43.6898 degrees and W71.8779 degrees and the Welton Falls coordinates are N43.6898 degrees and W71.8779 degrees. All of these places listed are all in walking distance of all of each other.
Definitions:
Physical: the natural features that make this place different not having to do with people.
Cultural:the man-made features that make this place different not having to do with nature.
There are many different special features to MT. Cardigan, some being physical and others being cultural.
At the top of MT. Cardigan, it is a bare summit caused by a fire back a long time ago that cleared the brush from the top. The bare rock summit is pretty steep, and it does not give you much traction. Also on the summit of Firescrew, there is a alpine bog, one of few in NH. There is a tree called a Hempel there, and you cannot find it anywhere else in the world. There are many other different physical features at Cardigan, such as the Welton Falls, the cascading waterfall, the Hobble Bushes, small heart shapped leafs, and the Indian Cucumbers, they taste like beets, and the only trees we saw on Firescrew and on Cardigan were Spruces, and Bolsum Fers, that was at the summit. But lower in elavation we saw many trees such as Moutain Maples, Striped Maples, and Sugar Maples, as well as White Pines, Ash trees and Yellow Birches. Even though those are some physical features, it would be silly for me not the include the biggest physical feature, Cardigan Moutain and Firescrew Moutain.
Those were the physical features but here are some cultural features. For starters, the AMC lodge. The AMC lodge is where people stay the night when they go hiking. We stayed here on our 3 day adventure to Cardigan Moutain. The fire tower was ran by the fire warden, and he looked over all of the mountains to see if there was fire. The fire warden slept in a shack called the fire warden shack that was located just below the summit of MT. Cardigan. On MT. Cardigan, there were geodetic markers. On the way to Welton Falls, there was a cellar, it used to be a house but the house is gone and it left some stone walls in the ground. Infact, the pond near the AMC Lodge is also a cultural feature. A man made it, so it is not a physical featureThese were a few cultural and physical differences.
We were there for three days, Wednesday 9/29/16 (Day 1), Thursday 9/30/16 (Day 2), and Friday 9/31/16 (Day 3,).
