Our Second Day at Mount Cardigan
After we got dressed in the morning, we headed downstairs to eat breakfast with our classmates. Then, we met with our group leader to determine our schedule for the day. We decided we were going to hike two mountains: Mount Cardigan and FireScrew Mountain. We gathered our sketchbooks and began our hike on a beautiful day.
Our first stop of the day was at Bailey Brook. We drew a picture of Bailey Brook, and other natural surroundings, to begin our journey towards Mount Cardigan. Humans change Mount Cardigan because they cut down many trees to make the trails.Next, we went off the trail to walk twelve feet and saw where our limbs reached. For example, Olivia's right arm reached a birch tree and her left arm reached an oak tree. She walked along the patch of Indian cucumbers. Next, we played a game called "One, Two, Three Contact," to help time pass while we were hiking. It actually helped.
As we started to approach the summit of Mount Cardigan, the temperature was dropping and the wind was picking up. I had to add another layer of clothing because I was getting cold. I noticed as we hiked, there were less trees and more open space. I was getting excited to reach the top.
Finally, we approached the top of Mount Cardigan. The views were amazing. One of my friend's started to cry because she was afraid of heights. Being up so high actually did not bother me one bit. We rested and ate lunch as we breathed in the beautiful fall air.
Our hike down went a lot faster than our hike up Mount Cardigan. We played the "One, Two, Three Contact," game again. We then took a detour to reach FireScrew Mountain. We drew a sketch of this mountain, and then headed back down the mountain towards the lodge.
As we approached the lodge, we discussed two words that we could use to describe our day. I chose, "adventurous" and "tiring." I felt it was adventurous because we hiked up this big mountain. I had a lot of fun drawing, hiking, and being with my friends. It was tiring because of how hard all my muscles worked to climb the mountain and then descend it. My knees were sore from working so hard.
After a long day of hiking, we returned to the lodge and had a wonderful dinner. Then, we had a campfire outside and sang campfire songs for about an hour. We told stories around the campfire and that was a lot of fun. Finally, it was time to return inside. We listened to Mr. Woolner read a story written by his uncle. We were then sent off to bed after this action packed filled day.
