                Many west Indian islands are part of an underwater chain of mountains formed by volcanoes.
                Tourism and farming are the most important economic activities in the west indies.
                The spaniards established the first permanent European settlement in the western hemisphere in 1496. That settlement is now the city of Santo Domingo, capital of the dominican Republic.
                The three archipelagos that make up the West Indies are the Bahamas which are made up of about 700 islands, the Greater Antilles with includes the the islands of Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico, and a group of islands called the Lesser Antilles.
                During the next 200 years the spaniards, the English, the French, And the dutch also founded colonies, or overseas settlement, on many of the islands.
