The location of the cardigan lodge can be described in two different ways. One of the two ways is the absolute location and that is all latitude and longitude. The other way is Relative location and that is when you are saying the lodge is west of Newfound Lake or in the west side of Alexandria NH. The location of the Cardigan lodge is when, talking about the absolute location is N 43 Degrees 38 Minutes 54 Seconds and W 71 Degrees 52 Minutes 53.1 Seconds. The relative Location is that the Cardigan Lodge is on the western Alexandria NH and a walkable location of Welton Falls. Also it is a harsh but walkable distance to Cardigan Mountain.
I think that our Cardigan trip was Different than any other mountain i have been to because of two reasons; Physical and Cultural.
Cultural is when something was made by humans. Then the Physical is made by the environment so it has nothing to with humans all created by the EARTH!!
I think it is different for physical reasons such as the cold wind on the top of the summit. The wind on the top is colder because there is no trees blocking the wind from getting to us. At the elevation we live on now it is the trees blocking us from so much wind. Also because of the fact that the higher you go in elevation the more wind there is going to be. ALSO because the tropopause does not allow anything beyond that point. Also, the wind has to squeeze through the little space in between the tropopause and the top of the mountain. Another reason that has to do with physical is the tree flagging. Tree flagging is when there is branches only on one of the side of the tree the cause of this is because the direction of the wind. Considering the wind is very cold and strong then the wind is blowing on that side almost all of the time and then that prevents the branches from growing on that side of the tree.
An example for cultural is the yellow blazers on the trails they are not made by earth, they are made by the AMC (Appalachian Mountain Club) leaders therefore it is cultural. The yellow blazers on the trails are used for marking the trails and making sure the hikers don't go off trail. The cairns are another good example of cultural. They are used for safety on the top of the mountains. They are kind of like the yellow blazers, but what the cairns are used for, for example, if it is really snowing hard and the hiker can not see where they are supposed to go, then the cairns mark the trail. A third example are the railings. On the nature trail, there is a really cool waterfall and there was a railing. The railing is used for safety, so you don't fall off of the edge. As you can see if the AMC leaders have done anything to the trails, then it is to improve safety. The AMC leaders want the trail to be as natural as it possibly can.
We were at cardigan for 3 fun filled days, Wednesday, September 28, Thursday September 29 and
friday September 30. It was a very fun three days that we were there. It was sad that it had to end so fast.
