Yellow Group D2 B3
Cardigan and Firescrew are very special mountains. At the summit of Firescrew there is an alpine bog. Alpine bogs are hard to find because they are usually only found above 3,500 ft. Cardigan is a special mountain as well. It has big carvings in the rock from long ago. It also has a fire tower on top of it. The whole region near Cardigan is special. It has an AMC lodge. Not very many mountains have one of those. Not even Mt. Washington! And that mountain is much bigger than Cardigan! Cardigan also has a waterfall named "Welton Falls" nearby. Not many people can say that they stayed in an AMC Lodge that is near 3 big mountains and hiked to a waterfall. Cardigan also has ski trails that run through and on it. Most mountains you cannot ski on. But Cardigan you can! Cardigan also has white pines at the summit which is very odd considering that they usually grow at a lower elevation. Most of the trees at the summits of both mountains were spruce and balsam fir. But there were a couple of mountain ash trees. Firescrew had a rather large and flat summit. But Cardigan had a dome shaped summit. Cardigan had a summit that had many puddles of water on it. It also had steep cliffs and inclines on the side. Firescrew did have a true summit was in a very odd place. You had to hike further than you thought. You kept reaching these little ridges in which you thought was the summit, but it turned out you had to keep going. On Cardigan it was easy to find the summit because there weren not any teaser ridges. Cardigan also had an official Geo Marker that was nailed into the rock. As you can see, Cardigan and Firescrew are very special mountains that are underestimated because of their size. But each carry their own natural magic! We were there for three days, Sunday Sept 25, Monday Sept 26, Tuesday Sept 27
