Title:
Concord Monitor Quiz Project
Sub-title- A Project About “Searching” for the Correct Information.
Name: Zelda A.
Date: March 11- 17 2016
Color Group: Blue
This is a quiz that was found in the Sunday January 3 2010 Concord Monitor newspaper…. Answers are there, too. You need to read the question, and… if you KNOW the correct answer, that’s good… but you must still VERIFY that correct answer. And write out your source for that correct answer. And, MOST importantly, I want to you also write out your thinking process- especially for the questions you do NOT know the answer to. Can you eliminate any of the answers? How? And how did you search for the correct answer? Did you search the QUESTION, or did you search the possible answers?
Write it out! Be complete. A good paragraph per answer is what we are after here…

1. What are the three places that make up the points of the Bermuda Triangle?
I am going to use the Yahoo search engine. I am going to use this, because Mr. Woolner told us to have a variety of options. I think it is either A or C I’m almost positive that it is not B. I used the search terms “Bermuda Triangle location” to narrow down the answers. There were many answers I had to look at them to decide which “snippet” to choose. I selected The “Bermuda attractions” Website. And the correct answer was C. The link I found was http://www.bermuda-attractions.com/bermuda2_00004f.htm. Miami, Bermuda, Puerto Rico was the correct answer.
1a: Recife is the popular, pretty capital of Pernambuco state in what country?
I am going to work on the Bing search engine. I am doing this because I Mr. Woolner told us to have many search engines, so I thought I’d try this one. I have no idea what the answer is. I guess that it is Brazil because Mr. Woolner described a type of wood. I used the search term “Pernambuco” and I found out that the answer is indeed C. As soon as I started searching the word the answer was an option to click on. So I did. I found a website so I clicked on the “snippet” and the website told me about Pernambuco. The link is, http://www.v-brazil.com/tourism/pernambuco/map-pernambuco.html. The answer concluded to be C Brazil. My guess is in pink and the final answer is in yellow.
Brazil
C. 3Historic Nara, Japan, celebrates a huge anniversary in 2010. How old is the country’s first capital city?
a. 570 years (in 2010)
b. 1,300 years (in 2010)
I am going to use the search engine dogpile. I am going to use this because I have never heard of it. I am guessing B because Japan is older that the USA. I noticed I had to scroll down quite a bit in order to not find a vacation website. I used the search terms “Nara Japan age”. I don’t see an answer that makes any sense. I found a website The NY times and it said the correct answer is B. Here is the link http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/03/travel/03headsup.html?_r=0.
The correct answer is 1300 years
I am going to use duckduckgo.com. I am using it because I have nothing else to use. I think it is B because of the pollution in this world. My search term(s) will be “Northern Pacific Gyre”. On duckduckgo I noticed that there were some ads. I found the link http://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/earth/oceanography/great-pacific-garbage-patch.htm and it told me I was correct the answer was B.
For question 5 I will be comparing 4 search engines. I think the answer will be A. The search engines I am choosing are Bing Google Duckduckgo and dogpile. I am doing this because Mr. Woolner told me to and because I like these engines. In each of the browsers I got different results. We are going to compare the results we get. My key words were “Hagia Sophia”. While typing in all the search engines there were many options to choose from. I noticed that dogpile had a section for ads and it was very confusing. I noticed that on duckduckgo.com this engine does not open a new tab duckduckgo turns into the website clicked on. This is a museum located in Istanbul, Turkey. Both my guess and answer was correct. So highlighted pink for my guess and yellow for the correct answer.
I am going to use Google. We (the bluegroup class) are going to d an “advanced search” We are going to try limiting the domain. I used the search terms “Kampar River Location” I could not find the answer easily. So I searched deeper and I found out that the answer is Gopeng, Malaysia. I had no idea so I did not guess. The correct answer is B Gopeng, Malaysia.
I used google and the search terms “Adirondacks”. And I came up with the correct answer. It is B. These mountains are in New York. I noticed that there was an immediate spark of answers involving New York. The first link that popped up on the google search engine was http://visitadirondacks.com/ and it is a website about visiting the Adirondacks and the location and that told me the final answer is B.
I am going to use bing again and I tried 3 different search terms “Bahamas west indies”, “Bahamas East indies” and “Bahamas South Indies”
I used Google as a search engine and I searched “United States 1st National park” and I am guessing the answer is C Yosemite national park. When I searched the answers came immediately popping up. I got several saying Yellowstone national park. So that is the correct answer.
I used Bing. My guess is B. I used the search terms “Hawaii’s smallest least developed island”. And I got the answer. With the link https://www.hawaii.com/lanai/ and it told me the correct answer is C Lanai. I was incorrect with my guessing which happens. I am not disappointed with my incorrect guess.
