This is a quiz that was found in the Sunday January 3 2010 Concord Monitor newspaper…. Answers are there, too. You need to read the question, and… if you KNOW the correct answer, that’s good… but you must still VERIFY that correct answer. And write out your source for that correct answer. And, MOST importantly, I want to you also write out your thinking process- especially for the questions you do NOT know the answer to. Can you eliminate any of the answers? How? And how did you search for the correct answer? Did you search the QUESTION, or did you search the possible answers?
Write it out! Be complete. A good paragraph per answer is what we are after here…

1. What are the three places that make up the points of the Bermuda Triangle?
I am going to use the search engine Duck Duck Go.
I am going to use this search engine because I’ve never used it and would like to try it out. I think the answer is B. Bermuda and Miami are too far south to be part of it. I’m going to use keywords “points” “Bermuda” and “Triangle.” I noticed that as I typed, the search engine started guessing, and the answers began popping up before I finish my key words. I checked out all of the first page’s snippets, and decided to use the National Geographic website. The link is: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2002/12/1205_021205_bermudatriangle.html. The correct answer was C: Miami, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda.
I am going to use a different search engine this time. I will try using Yahoo, as I simply want to try it out. I think the answer is C, as I don’t really know about any of them, so I’m guessing. I’ll use the keywords “Recife” and “Pernambuco.” I started to type in my keyword “Recife,” and before I finished typing it, answers were popping up. I found an EDU website which I read, with this URL: http://pages.uoregon.edu/sergiok/brasil/recife.html. The correct answer WAS C: Brazil.
This time, I am going to use a different search engine, Ixquick.com, as Mr. Woolner said so. I think the answer is A, as the others are too old. I’m going to use the search terms “Nara” “2010” and “Anniversary.” Ixquick doesn’t show results as you type, nor does it show the number of search results. One snippit caught my eye- http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e4116.html, as it had the answer in the title: B: 1,300 years (in 2010.)
For the fourth question, I’ll use WebCrawler, another search engine. I believe the answer is B, just as an educated guess. I’ll use the search terms “Northern” “Pacific” and “Gyre.” WebCrawler also didn’t show results as I typed. Also, it didn’t show the amount of results. I chose the website http://www.gyrecleanup.org/what-is-the-gyre/, as it had the answer in the snippit; B: A giant debris field of garbage trapped in a spinning circle.
We are going to do this EXTREMELY differently. We’re going to try comparing 4 search engines. I’m going to use Google, Dogpile, Bing, and WWW Journey. I think the answer is A as a guess. I’m using the search terms “Hagia” and “Sophia.” On all of them but WWW Journey, answers appeared while typing. All of them besides Dogpile immediately showed photos. Bing showed directions to it, and Google showed a critic’s rating. I used the Hagia Sophia’s official website: http://www.hagiasophia.com/. The answer was A: Istanbul, Turkey. It’s a museum that previously was a Byzantine Christian Church and a mosque.
For this one, we will do an advanced search with Google, because Mr. Woolner told us too. I think the answer is C, as Kampar sounds exotic for West Virginia and a little too modern for Malaysia. I want to use the search terms “Kampar” and “River.” I used the website http://english.fullerton.edu/publications/clnArchives/pdf/Sew-Rivers.pdf, as it’s a .edu site, which we were advanced searching for. The answer was B: Gopeng, Malaysia.
For this one, I’m going to do another advanced search, this one for a .com site. I’m going to use the search engine Google. I believe that the answer is A, as I already know that foods like scones and tea are popular in areas like London. The keywords I’m going to use are “Devonshire,” and “England.” I found this site: http://www.britannica.com/place/Devon. Note that it’s a .com site, which is what I was advanced searching for. The correct answer was B: Southwest England.
For this question, I’m going to use an advanced search for a .gov site. I’m going to use the search engine Bing.
I believe that the answer is B, as I know that the Adirondacks are mountains. I’m going to use the search term “Adirondacks.” I found this website: http://apa.ny.gov/local_government/index.html. Again, it is the domain I was looking for. I actually ended up using Google, because after trying an advanced search with Bing, I discovered that you can’t do an advanced search using Bing. The correct answer was B: Mountain range in New York state.
For this question, I’m going to use an advanced search for a .com site. I’m going to use the search engine Yahoo. I believe the answer is A, as I’ve heard the term “West Indies” in the past. I’m going to use the search terms “Caribbean” “Formal” and “Name.” After searching, I had to change my terms to “Caribbean” and “Indies” as the former terms wouldn’t come up with any good results. I found the website http://www.dominicaliving.com/. Still the domain I was advanced searching for! Also, the advanced search wouldn’t work with Yahoo, so I had to use google again. The correct answer was A: The West Indies.
For this question, I’m going to use an advanced search for a .org site. I’m going to use the search engine Duck Duck Go. The keywords I am going to use are “departure” and “Galapagos.” I believe the answer is A, simply as a guess. I found the website http://wikitravel.org/en/Galapagos_Islands. Advanced searching DID work with Duck Duck Go, and the correct answer was A: Quito, Equador.
For this question, I’m going to use an advanced search for another .org site. I’m going to use the search engine Yahoo, as it actually CAN do advanced searches with a certain format. I think the answer is A, as it sounds really old. The keywords I’m going to use are “USA,” “First,” “National” and “Park.” I found this website: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_parks_of_the_United_States, as it had the answer in the snippet. The correct answer was B: Yellowstone.
