This is a quiz that was found in the Sunday January 3 2010 Concord Monitor newspaper…. Answers are there, too.  You need to read the question, and… if you KNOW the correct answer, that’s good… but you must still VERIFY that correct answer.  And write out your source for that correct answer.  And, MOST importantly, I want to you also write out your thinking process- especially for the questions you do NOT know the answer to.  Can you eliminate any of the answers?  How?   And how did you search for the correct answer?  Did you search the QUESTION, or did you search the possible answers?

Write it out!  Be complete.  A good paragraph per answer is what we are after here…

    1. Bahamas, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico
    2. Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and Tortola
    3. Miami, Bermuda, Puerto Rico

I am going to use Google as I am familiar with it. As a prediction, I think the answer is c. The key words I used are: 3, Points, Bermuda, Triangle. After the research I did, I’ve come to think the correct answer is c. I found the answer at this website: http://blog.dictionary.com/bermuda-triangle/

  1. Recife is the popular, pretty capital of Pernambuco state in what country?

    1. Italy
    2. Spain
    3. Brazil

I predict that the correct answer is c as it doesn’t seem like a Italian name at all and even though it does seem Spanish, it seems a bit more Brazilian. I’m going to use the browser BING, as I am somewhat familiar with it. The key words I used are: Recife, Pernambuco. After the search, I think the answer is c. I found the answer at this website by the University of Oregon: http://pages.uoregon.edu/sergiok/brasil/recife.html

  1. Historic Nara, Japan, celebrates a huge anniversary in 2010.  How old is the country’s first capital city?

    1. 570 years  (in 2010)
    2. 1,300 years   (in 2010)
    3. 4,000 years   (in 2010)

I predict that the correct answer is b as it’s not likely to be c as 4000 years would be 1990 BC, and that was before land was split into countries and if there were no countries, there could have been no capitals, and a seems too recent. The browser I’m using is Yahoo, as my dad uses it and I’ve used it a couple of times. The key terms I used are Nara Japan Age. After a bit of research, I’ve found a website that said Nara was Japan’s capital in 710-794, which is 1300 years ago, so the correct answer is b. The website I mentioned can be found with this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nara,_Nara

  1. The Northern Pacific Gyre lies in the Pacific Ocean between Japan and the west coast of the United States. What does it contain?

    1. A huge pod of an estimated 2,000 endangered gray whales
    2. A giant debris field of garbage trapped in a spinning circle
    3. An underground sea mountain 7 miles tall

I predict the answer is b, again, as I feel the ocean isn’t 7 miles deep and whales would migrate north and south. I’m going to use DuckDuckGo, as I’ve never used it. The keywords I used are northern pacific gyre. When I searched it, there was a website by HowStuffWorks that was titled Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It said “In the broad expanse of the northern Pacific Ocean, there exists the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, a slowly moving, clockwise spiral of currents created by a high-pressure system of air currents.” “The area is filled with something besides plankton: trash, millions of pounds of it, most of it plastic. It's the largest landfill in the world, and it floats in the middle of the ocean. That proves the answer is c. 1. This year (in 2010) a mosaic of an angel was discovered under the floor of the Hagia Sophia. Where and what is the Hagia Sophia?
