This is a quiz that was found in the Sunday January 3 2010 Concord Monitor newspaper…. Answers are there, too.  You need to read the question, and… if you KNOW the correct answer, that’s good… but you must still VERIFY that correct answer.  And write out your source for that correct answer.  And, MOST importantly, I want to you also write out your thinking process- especially for the questions you do NOT know the answer to.  Can you eliminate any of the answers?  How?   And how did you search for the correct answer?  Did you search the QUESTION, or did you search the possible answers?

Write it out!  Be complete.  A good paragraph per answer is what we are after here…

1.      What are the three places that make up the points of the Bermuda Triangle?

a.      Bahamas, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico

b.      Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and Tortola

c.       Miami, Bermuda, Puerto Rico

I decided to use google for my search engine. I am going to use google because I’m more familiar with it than any other search engine. I am going to use the key words Bermuda, Triangle, and Locations. I found 350,000 results and I scrolled through the few snippets until I found a website that I wanted to read. It was…. http://www.worldatlas.com/aatlas/infopage/bermudat.htm and I found a map with the correct answer. It is c. Bermuda, Miami, and Puerto Rico.

  1. Recife is the popular, pretty capital of Pernambuco state in what country?

a.      Italy

b.      Spain

c.       Brazil

The search engine that I used is Bing. I am going to use Bing because the home menu was colorful and organized well. I am going to use capital, Pernambuco, and Precife for my key words. I think the answer is Brazil. I found 5, 670,000 results and scrolled down and found a website that is….. https://insiderbrazil.wordpress.com/2011/10/29/recife-capital-of-pernambuco/ and found the answer. It is c. Brazil

  1. Historic Nara, Japan, celebrates a huge anniversary in 2010.  How old is the country’s first capital city?

a.      570 years  (in 2010)

b.      1,300 years   (in 2010)

c.       4,000 years   (in 2010)

I am going to use a third search engine…https://ixquick.com/  because I have never used it before and I wanted to try something new. I have no idea what the correct answer is. My guess is that it is not a. I am going to use Nara, Japan, and capital city. When I looked up my key words it didn’t give suggestions, which was weird. I found a lot of snippets, but there was not a total amount of snippets found. I scrolled through reading the snippets and selected a site that seemed to have an answer… which was b 1,300 years ago. Nara was the capital city of Japan. http://web-japan.org/atlas/historical/his12.html

  1. The Northern Pacific Gyre lies in the Pacific Ocean between Japan and the west coast of the United States. What does it contain?

a.      A huge pod of an estimated 2,000 endangered gray whales

b.      A giant debris field of garbage trapped in a spinning circle

c.       An underground sea mountain 7 miles tall

d.      I think I will use a fourth search engine… I think I will use duck duck go. I am going to use this search engine because it doesn’t track. I honestly don’t know what the answer is. In duck duck go…. Other search terms popped up but… not what I has typed during the last class… so apparently it saves searches, but doesn’t track who does the seartch. I scrolled through the snippets, and found a site that was earth day.org and clicked on the answer which was b A giant debris field of garbage trapped in a spinning circle   http://www.earthday.org/2014/07/07/north-pacific-trash-gyre/

  1. This year (in 2010)  a mosaic of an angel was discovered under the floor of the Hagia Sophia.  Where and what is the Hagia Sophia?

a.      Istanbul, Turkey.  It’s a museum that previously was a Byzantine Christian Church and a mosque.

b.      Luxembourg.  It’s a cathedral built to honor St. Sophia, the country’s patron saint.

c.       Mexico City.  It’s a traditional market where the image of the angel is said to have healing powers.

For this number 5, we are going to do this very differently. We are going to use 4 different search engines, and we are going to compare the results. The search engines that I’m using are google, bing, duck duck go, and webcrawler.  I have no clue what the answer is. My search terms are going to be Hagina, Sophia, and location. Google gave me answers as soon as I pasted the text. Bing gave me similar answers and the other search engines waited till I searched it. All four search engines brought up Wikipedia in the first two snippets. I scrolled through all the snippets though most of the website gave me travel and hotel websites. But I did eventually found a websites it was…

http://www.livescience.com/27574-hagia-sophia.html the answer was…..B Luxembourg.  It’s a cathedral built to honor St. Sophia, the country’s patron saint.

  1. If you want to go whitewater rafting on the Kampar River, where do you have to go?

a.      Wheeling, West Virginia.

b.      Gopeng, Malaysia

c.       Johannesburg, South Africa

I am going to use google as a search engine. But we are going to do an advanced search but not the gear, are going to limit the domain results. The key words are going to be Kampar, river, and location. To narrow down the search I used the key words plus site:*.com, and had 1,170 search results. Instead of the giant amount of websites to choose from, it was very helpful. I have no clue what the answer is, and I can’t really cut any out or take a guess. Once I scrolled through some of the websites I found the one that had the correct answer. The website was http://www.radakadventure.com/kampar-river the answer was B Gopeng, Malaysia.

  1. Most tourists love Devonshire cream tea – scones, clotted cream and raspberry jam with tea.  But where in England is Devonshire?

a.      In dairy country east of London

b.      Southwest England

c.       Near the Scottish border

I am going to use duck duck go for my search engine, but once again I’m going to do an advanced search, which is basically narrowing down the search. The key words are going to be Devonshire, location, and England. To narrow down the search with key words plus site:*.com. When I searched this there weren’t an amount of search results. Once scrolled through the page I found a website that seemed to have the correct information. The website was http://www.britannica.com/place/Devon I read the first sentence then found the answer it was b Southwest England.

8        What and where are the Adirondacks?

d.      The Amish region in Indiana where craftsmen make chairs

e.       Mountain range in New York state

f.       American Indian reservations in the Florida Everglades

For this question I am going to use EntireWeb Search Engine. Again I’m using an advanced search. I am going to use this search engine because I have not heard about this search engine before. The key words for searching this question are going to be what, where, and Adirondacks. When I search my keywords, I’m once again going to add the plus site:*.edu after my key words.
