Title: Concord Monitor Quiz Research Project

Sub-title- A Project about “Searching” for the Correct Information.

First Name Patrick Q.________________

Date March 11-   2016_________

 Color Group: Green___

This is a quiz that was found in the Sunday January 3 2010 Concord Monitor newspaper…. Answers are there, too.  You need to read the question, and… if you KNOW the correct answer, that’s good… but you must still VERIFY that correct answer.  And write out your source for that correct answer.  And, MOST importantly, I want to you also write out your thinking process- especially for the questions you do NOT know the answer to.  Can you eliminate any of the answers?  How?   And how did you search for the correct answer?  Did you search the QUESTION, or did you search the possible answers?

Write it out!  Be complete.  A good paragraph per answer is what we are after here…

1.      What are the three places that make up the points of the Bermuda Triangle?

a.       Bahamas, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico

b.      Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and Tortola

c.       Miami, Bermuda, Puerto Rico

I will be using DuckDuckGo as my search engine for this project. I am using this because I like alterative things and like the fell and atmosphere of the website. After I searched ‘Bermuda triangle’, I scrolled through the snippets of info and found the correct website. When I opened it up, it showed a map that showed the three points of the Bermuda triangle. Those are Miami, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico Here’s the link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bermuda_Triangle

And here’s an image: http://islamicvoice.com/islamicvoice/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Bermuda-Triangle.jpg

  1. Recife is the popular, pretty capital of Pernambuco state in what country?

a.       Italy

b.      Spain

c.       Brazil

For this question I used Ixquick as a search engine. I did this because it both sounded cool and I was kind of told to use it by my teacher. When I searched “Pernambuco is what country” the first thing to come up was this http://www.brazil.org.za/pernambuco.html . In the link it said ‘Brazil’ and the website said Brazil. I then inferred the answer is Brazil.

  1. Historic Nara, Japan, celebrates a huge anniversary in 2010.  How old is the country’s first capital city?

a.       570 years  (in 2010)

b.      1,300 years   (in 2010)

c.       4,000 years   (in 2010)

For this question, I will be using Dogpile. I am using a different search engine because mainly I am required to. I am guessing that a. is not correct as it is too recent. For search terms, I will search ‘Nara Japan Capital City’. When I searched this, the second website to pop up had the answer. It turns out, b. was the correct answer! It was founded sometime between 710 and 784 AD.  Here’s the link: http://archaeology.about.com/cs/asia/a/nara.htm  Here’s an image of Nara Japan. Pretty.

  1. The Northern Pacific Gyre lies in the Pacific Ocean between Japan and the west coast of the United States. What does it contain?

a.       A huge pod of an estimated 2,000 endangered gray whales

b.      A giant debris field of garbage trapped in a spinning circle

c.       An underground sea mountain 7 miles tall

For this question, I will use Bing. I am using this one mainly because I was told to, but also because Bing is hardly used and I feel bad for them. L My search terms were ‘North Pacific Gyre’ which makes sense when you think about REAL hard. The real answer is b. Yech. There is a large patch of garbage that is estimated to be 90% plastic just floating in the water, showing little signs of breakdown. Here’s the link: http://scribol.com/environment/waste-and-recycling/the-north-pacific-gyre-100-million-tons-of-garbage-and-growing

  1. This year (in 2010)  a mosaic of an angel was discovered under the floor of the Hagia Sophia.  Where and what is the Hagia Sophia?

a.       Istanbul, Turkey.  It’s a museum that previously was a Byzantine Christian Church and a mosque.

b.      Luxembourg.  It’s a cathedral built to honor St. Sophia, the country’s patron saint.

c.       Mexico City.  It’s a traditional market where the image of the angel is said to have healing powers.

For this one, we will be using four different search engines and averaging out the results. I will be using DuckDuckGo, Dogpile, Ixquick, and because I’m mentally a 90’s kid, Webcrawler. I believe the answer is c. because it makes the most sense (to me of course.). My search terms were ‘Hagia Sophia’. On all four websites, there was one common piece of information; It is a Byzantium Christian church and mosque in Istanbul, Turkey. Here are the links: http://www.livescience.com/27574-hagia-sophia.html, http://www.sacred-destinations.com/turkey/istanbul-hagia-sophia, http://hagia-sophia.net/, and http://www.hagiasophia.com/,

  1. If you want to go whitewater rafting on the Kampar River, where do you have to go?

a.       Wheeling, West Virginia.

b.      Gopeng, Malaysia

c.       Johannesburg, South Africa

For this one, I used the search engine google. The only reason was because it can narrow down the search to more relevant things. The river is located in Malaysia, and is a very large tourist attraction because of its large waves and good surfing. Here’s the website that gives you the info: http://www.indonesia.travel/sites/site/917/surfing-kampar-rivers-stunning-bono-tidal-bore

  1. Most tourists love Devonshire cream tea – scones, clotted cream and raspberry jam with tea.  But where in England is Devonshire?

a.       In dairy country east of London

b.      Southwest England

c.       Near the Scottish border

For this question I used WWW Journey. It is a homemade html search engine made by my friend from school. It works extremely well, and brought up this website: http://ukga.org/england/Devon/index.html. It says on the website that it’s southern border is the English channel, and the picture shows that it is on peninsula, so if you look at a map of England, it is in the SE corner of England.

  1. What and where are the Adirondacks?

a.       The Amish region in Indiana where craftsmen make chairs

b.      Mountain range in New York state

c.       American Indian reservations in the Florida Everglades

Once again, I will be using WWW Journey for a search engine, as it is very convenient and efficient search engine. The website that popped up showed information about New York, so I could only guess that the correct answer was New York. Here’s the link: http://visitadirondacks.com/about/mountains

  1. Most people just call the region the Caribbean, but what is its formal name?

a.       The West Indies

b.      The East Indies

c.       The South Indies

For this one, I will be using google, even though I don’t like it that much, but I must, because I have to use different search engines. The most relevant website that popped up immediately showed WEST INDIES in large font when I opened it. Using basic logic, I figured the answer must be the West Indies. Here’s the link: http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Caribbean

  1. Almost all tourists who visit the Galapagos Islands leave for their trip from what city?

a.       Quito, Ecuador

b.      Santiago, Chile

c.       La Paz, Bolivia

For this one, I will be using Bing as a search engine because hardly anyone uses it and I feel bad for them. L Anyway, the most relevant website said that Archipielago de Colon was the long form of the name, meaning a small territory off the coast of ECUADOR,  so I guessed the answer was a.

c.       Yosemite
