Day Two

Day Two at Cardigan Mountain was the day we climbed the mountain. We saw some examples that day of Human/Environment Interaction, and they started the moment we rolled out of bed. The minute we woke up we could see examples of H/E I, because the lodge we were staying in was built by humans. For that to happen, trees had to be cleared and grass had to be dug up. The project was probably also affected by weather, which would be another example of H/E I. We ate a breakfast of eggs and bacon, then hit the trails. There was another example of H/E I. The trails were made by humans, and probably with considerable effort, because they were very user-friendly. Humans interacted with the environment by making the trails. We stopped for lunch less than a mile from the summit, near an area called PJ's Ledge. As we ate our lunch, (and as we were walking) we left marks on the trails. Again, interacting with the environment. Finally, we reached the bare-rock summit. It was so cold and windy that we had to put on coats (the environment interacting with us). The summit of Cardigan Mountain also has a fire tower. This is yet another example of H/E I. People had interacted with the environment by building the tower, which, in fact, was also built because of H/E I. Humans had interacted in one way or another with the environment when a forest fire started, which alerted us to the need of a fire tower. (Either the fire started from arson (humans interacting with the environment) or it was natural (the environment interacting with us)) We then descended the mountain, seeing all the same examples of H/E I that we had on the way up. When we got back to the lodge, we had dinner and went outside for a campfire. The campfire was the last example of H/E I during Day Two of the Cardigan trip. We were interacting with the environment by having a campfire, because the fire sent smoke and residue into the air. After the campfire, we all went to bed, very tired after a great Day Two at Cardigan Mountain.

Here are all the sketches I drew on Day Two:

This is a sketch of a dead tree we saw while hiking. It had been attacked by Yellow-bellied Sap Suckers, and we could see the damage.

This is a sketch of Birch Polypore that we saw, and of some Shining Clubmoss that we found as well.

This is a sketch of the Croo Bridge on the way up Cardigan Mountain, and of a fallen log that Artist's Conk growing on it.

This is a sketch of our view from the top of Cardigan Mountain. This was the last sketch I did on Day Two.
