This is a quiz that was found in the Sunday January 3 2010 Concord Monitor newspaper…. Answers are there, too.  You need to read the question, and… if you KNOW the correct answer, that’s good… but you must still VERIFY that correct answer.  And write out your source for that correct answer.  And, MOST importantly, I want to you also write out your thinking process- especially for the questions you do NOT know the answer to.  Can you eliminate any of the answers?  How?   And how did you search for the correct answer?  Did you search the QUESTION, or did you search the possible answers?

Write it out!  Be complete.  A good paragraph per answer is what we are after here…

1.      What are the three places that make up the points of the Bermuda Triangle?

    1. Bahamas, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico
    2. Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and Tortola
    3. Miami, Bermuda, Puerto Rico

I am going to use the search engine google. I am going to use this search engine because I like how fast it is. I think the answer is C) because I know that the Puerto Rico and Bermuda are points of the Bermuda triangle. I am going to use key words Three Points Bermuda Triangle Location. I noticed that as I typed that the search engine started to guess my key words. And then the answer popped up. I looked at all of the “snip its” and decided to use a .com web site. http://www.bermudatravelsite.com/Triangle.html

This website has the correct answer, C.

  1. Recife is the popular, pretty capital of Pernambuco state in what country?

    1. Italy
    2. Spain
    3. Brazil

I am going to use a different search engine this time. I think I will try to use Bing. I am going to use Bing because I think that It is a bad engine and I want to get it over with. I think that the correct answer is C) because I know that it is not Spain because Spain doesn’t have states.  I am going to use Pernambuco and capital as my key words. I saw on this sight

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pernambuco

That C is the correct answer. I found a .org website that I decided to read.

3.Historic Nara, Japan, celebrates a huge anniversary in 2010.  How old is the country’s first capital city?

    1. 570 years  (in 2010)
    2. 1,300 years   (in 2010)
    3. 4,000 years   (in 2010)

I am going to use a different search engine this time. This one does not track anything. The search engine is called Ixquick.com. I am going to use this because I have never used it before and because it is going away soon. I think that the correct answer if d). It would make it be the oldest country if it was 4,000 years old. So it is not likely to be f). I am going to use Japan first capital as my key words. I noticed that when I used Ixquick nothing happened when I typed. I found out that E) Is the correct answer. I found a .com website that had the correct answer. There are lots of snip its and I read this one and it came up. I selected the explorer web site. Even though I had to do the math, it said that it was the capital in 710. So I subtracted 710 by 2016 and I got 1,300.

  1. The Northern Pacific Gyre lies in the Pacific Ocean between Japan and the west coast of the United States. What does it contain?

    1. A huge pod of an estimated 2,000 endangered gray whales
    2. A giant debris field of garbage trapped in a spinning circle
    3. An underground sea mountain 7 miles tall

We are going to do this once very differently, we are going to use four different search engines and compare them. I will try google, I will try Bing, I am going to use ixquick and duck duck go. I don’t know what the correct answer is on this one. I will use the search terms Northern Pacific Gyre. Google starts to give results as soon as I start to type. It also remembers what I have searched for and in the pictures I can see that there is lots of people picking up garbage. On Bing the same thing happens and when I start to type in some of my key words Bing try’s to guess what I am going to say. Bing gives lots of writing and websites as opposed to Google with gives lots of pictures. When I use Ixquick nothing comes up when am typing and only comes up when I have hit the search button. I also notice that there is only text and no pictures what so ever on the front page. I think that it is quite boring. On duck duck go when I start typing they give me suggestions to type and it also only has text. I have found out from reading a web site page off of duck duck go. I found out that B) is the correct answer. I found a .org website that had the correct answer in it. It even says the answer right in the URL! Here is the link.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Pacific_garbage_patch

  1. This year (in 2010)  a mosaic of an angel was discovered under the floor of the Hagia Sophia.  Where and what is the Hagia Sophia?

    1. Istanbul, Turkey.  It’s a museum that previously was a Byzantine Christian Church and a mosque.
    2. Luxembourg.  It’s a cathedral built to honor St. Sophia, the country’s patron saint.
    3. Mexico City.  It’s a traditional market where the image of the angel is said to have healing powers.

And for the fifth question we will use yet another search engine. I am going to use WebCrawler. Mr. Woolner told me to use this search engine. I think that the answer to this question is  I think that the answer is B) because It talks about St. Sophia and the question says that they found an angel mosaic under the floor of the Hagia Sophia. I am going to use angel and Hagia and Sophia as my key words. Even as I type nothing comes up. I clicked on a hotel website and found that in the search box it had said the answer. In fact it is B)! This web page is a .com site. Here is the link.

  1. If you want to go whitewater rafting on the Kampar River, where do you have to go?

    1. Wheeling, West Virginia.
    2. Gopeng, Malaysia
    3. Johannesburg, South Africa

I am going to do an advanced search on google this time. I am using google because Mr.

Woolner told me too. I do not know the correct answer. I am going to use Kampar River as my key words. I highly noticed that once I started to search it gave me lots of suggestions. I got 345,000 results. I then typed in Kampar river site:*.edu for my advanced search. I found that when you do this I only get .edu sites. It also brings the website number down to 1,480. I found that when I come up to this page It says on a couple of the headings Malaysia.

 https://www.google.com/#safe=strict&q=kampar+river+site:*.edu

Then when I click on that site I then find out that the correct answer is indeed B).

As you can see that this is an .edu website.

  1. Most tourists love Devonshire cream tea – scones, clotted cream and raspberry jam with tea.  But where in England is Devonshire?

    1. In dairy country east of London
    2. Southwest England
    3. Near the Scottish border

I am going to use another search engine this time. And again I am going to use an advance search. I am going to use the google search engine. And I am going to do a .com advance search. I am going to use google because I haven’t used it in a while so I feel like I should try it out with an advanced search. For my key words I am going to use Devonshire England. Not too much came up when I started to type it in and I noticed that it took a little longer to load with an advanced search than it does with a regular search. But then when I clicked on one of the sites that said it was a .com it redirected me to Wikipedia which is an .org. I think that the answer is B) because in the question it says England and in that answer it also says England. 76,100,000 websites come up with an advanced search. I noticed that it is all writing now when I have an advanced search also. When I read the first page it says that it is in the Southeast of England! I was correct! Here is the link!

  1. What and where are the Adirondacks?

    1. The Amish region in Indiana where craftsmen make chairs
    2. Mountain range in New York state
    3. American Indian reservations in the Florida Everglades

And again I am going to use another search engine with an advanced search. I am going to use the search engine Duck Duck Go and I am going to do and advanced search for a .gov website. I am going to use this because I would like to see what happens when I use a search engine like Duck Duck Go and also have an advanced search of a .gov along with it! I think that the answer to this question is B) because I have seen a map of New York before and they were in New York. I am going to use Adirondack as my key word. I noticed that when I start searching that it keeps track of everything that I type! At first it wouldn’t take the “*” sign so when I got rid of it lots of pages came up. So I clicked on the first page that came up and started to read it and it confirms that B) is the correct answer. Here is the link!

  1. Most people just call the region the Caribbean, but what is its formal name?  .net

    1. The West Indies
    2. The East Indies
    3. The South Indies

I am going to use the search engine Bing and the advanced search of a .net. I am going to use this search engine because I have never used it before and I would like to try something new. I think that the answer is A) because I have herd the Caribbean and the West Indies in the same sentence before and I think they are somewhat related. For my search terms I am going to search Caribbean West Indies. There were 3,580,000 different websites that came up. http://www.historyworld.net/wrldhis/PlainTextHistories.asp?groupid=235

This website shows the correct answer which was the West Indies. A)!

  1.  Almost all tourists who visit the Galapagos Islands leave for their trip from what city?

    1. Quito, Ecuador
    2. Santiago, Chile
    3. La Paz, Bolivia

I am going to use the search engine dogpile and an advanced search of a .gov. I am going to use this search engine because I want to see how well it works with an advanced search. I think that the answer to this question is B) because I think that I have heard that Galapagos Islands are in Chile. I am going to use the search terms Galapagos Islands. At first I started to type and they already knew what I was going to say. Then when I put in the advanced search in nothing came up, so I guess that dog pile doesn’t work with advanced searches. I am going to try another search engine that I know will work. Google. And I am going to stay with the .gov. I searched through the snip its and found one that had a map in Ecuador and said that travelers went to Ecuador and also to the Galapagos Islands. So the answer is A)!  Here is the link!

  1. What was the United States’ first national park?

    1. Great Smoky Mountain
    2. Yellowstone
    3. Yosemite

I am going to use the search engine Bing and the advanced search .com. I think that the answer is B) yellow stone because Yellowstone is the national park that I am most familiar with. I am going to use the search terms First National Park United States. I started to type things in and it started guessing what I want to say. I  looked at one of the pages and it said Yellowstone National Park was the answer. So B) was the answer. It is a .com advanced search. Here is the link!

  1. Of Hawaii’s six major islands, which is the smallest and least developed?

    1. Lili’uokalani
    2. Kauai
    3. Lanai

I am going to use the search engine duck duck go, and an advanced search of a .net. I am going to use this search engine because I think that it will be interesting to use duck duck go and advanced search of something totally different. A .net. I think that the answer is A) because in the answer it has something that looks like it says little. I am going to use smallest, least developed major Islands Hawaii as my search terms. I looked through the snipits and found that the answer is B). Here is the link!
