This is a quiz that was found in the Sunday January 3 2010 Concord Monitor newspaper…. Answers are there, too. You need to read the question, and… if you KNOW the correct answer, that’s good… but you must still VERIFY that correct answer. And write out your source for that correct answer. And, MOST importantly, I want to you also write out your thinking process- especially for the questions you do NOT know the answer to. Can you eliminate any of the answers? How? And how did you search for the correct answer? Did you search the QUESTION, or did you search the possible answers?
Write it out! Be complete. A good paragraph per answer is what we are after here…

1. What are the three places that make up the points of the Bermuda Triangle?
I am going to use the search engine Google. I am going to use this search engine because it is my favorite search engine. I think the correct answer is c. I am going to use the search terms Bermuda, Triangle and points. I typed the search terms into the search box but the words jumped up into a different box. Then I scrolled through the snippets and decided to look at the .gov page. On the page I found a map with the correct answer. http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/bermudatri.html The correct answer is C. It is Miami, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico.
I am going to use a different search engine and have decided to use Bing. I will use this one because it is my second favorite. The search terms I’m going to use are Pernambuco and capital. Interesting as soon as I typed Pernambuco other terms started filling in automatically and I guess the search engine knew what I was going to type next. I scrolled through the snippets and chose http://www.brazil.org.za/pernambuco.html. The correct answer is Brazil.
I am going to use another kind of search engine. I am going to use Ixquick. I am going to try this one because I have never used it before and have heard that it doesn’t track your searches. The search terms. I’m going to use are Nara, Japan, and capital city. I think the answer is b. because it is an old number but not too old. As I typed my search terms nothing popped up on the screen. I scrolled through the snippets and chose
http://web-japan.org/atlas/historical/his12.html. The answer is b. 1,300 years old.
I am going to use another kind of search engine. I am going to use DuckDuckGo. I am going to use this because I have never heard of it. I don’t know what the answer is. The search terms I’m going to use are Northern Pacific Gyre. I scrolled through the snippets and chose http://www.gyrecleanup.org/what-is-the-gyre/ . I found that the answer is b. debris field of garbage.
We are going to do this question in a very different way and compare some different search engines. I am going to use Google, Webcrawler, DuckDuckGo, and Ixquick. I don’t know what the answer is. The search terms we are using are Hagia Sophia. As I type in DuckDuckGo search terms popped up. DuckDuckGo apparently searches but doesn’t track me. Google gave me websites right away before I finished typing. Ixquick gave me travel sites and then the regular websites when I scrolled down. The same thing happened with Webcrawler that happened to Ixquick. DuckDuckGo gave me regular websites like Google did. On Google I looked through the snippets and chose http://www.gyrecleanup.org . I found out that the answer was A. in Istanbul Turkey and it’s a museum.
We are about to start number six. We are going to do something different again. We are going to limit the search using site: tricks. I’m using DuckDuckGo again. The search terms I’m using are Kampar River Malaysia:*.com. This makes it so the sites that come up are .com websites. The website I used is http://www.tourmalaysia.com.my/Raft/itek/itek.htm . If you scroll down on this site it shows you that the answer is B. Kampar River is in Malaysia.
For this question I’m using Google for my search engine again and I am also going to limit the search again like in question 6. The search terms I’m using are Devonshire England location:*.com. When I was typing in the search terms Google predicted what I was going to say along with related searches. I used a .com website and this is the one I used http://www.britannica.com/place/Devon . This site said that the answer was B. Southwest England.
For this question I’m using Bing again because it is one of my favorite search engines. I’m also going to be doing what I did in questions 6 and 7. The search terms I’m using are Adirondacks location:*.org. After I hit enter a bunch of travel sites came up as well as some other sites. I chose this website https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adirondack_Mountains . I used Wikipedia and then I went to another website to check the answer. This is another site I used to make sure the answer was correct http://www.adirondack.net/maps/regionmaps/adkarea.cfm . The answer is B. mountain range in New York state.
For this question I am using Google again because it is my favorite. I’m going to be doing what I’ve done in the last couple of questions. The search terms I’m using are Caribbean formal name:*.org. There were a lot of travel sites and blogs but I chose this one http://www.caricom.org/jsp/community/caricom_history.jsp?menu=community . I found out the that answer is A. The West Indies.
For this question I am going to use DuckDuckGo. I’m also using the trick like I have been doing for a while.
