Day 1: The Journey Begins...

September 27, 2015

Our Cardigan adventure began at Hopkinton Middle/High School at 8:30 in the morning, on September 27, 2015. Many of us arrived half-asleep, wearing sweatpants and sporting serious bed-head, lugging suitcases, duffels, and various pillows. The bus ride was long, filled with singing and anticipation. When we (finally!) reached the AMC Cardigan Lodge, we met one of the instructors, Hope, who led us to a grassy lawn next to the lodge. We played several games while our bunk rooms were being prepared, then broke into our hiking groups for a map-and-compass scavenger hunt. Then, we moved our luggage up to the rooms and began unpacking. After a game of soccer, we enjoyed our first meal at the lodge: spaghetti, meatballs, and chocolate-and-vanilla marble cake for dessert. Stomachs full and smiles plastered on our faces, we quickly put on warm layers and met outside for a night activity. Our instructors led us, blindfolded, through the woods, to a clearing away from the lodge. We talked about nocturnal animals, and played a game called Bat and Moth. Finally, we watched the lunar eclipse from the parking lot, the ending to a perfect first day. One of the 5 Themes of Geography that applied to our first day at Cardigan was movement; we moved from Hopkinton, New Hampshire, to the AMC Cardigan Lodge in Alexandria, New Hampshire.
