Sub-title: A Project about “Searching” for the Correct Information.

First Name Last I: Kasey C.

Date: March 11-17 2016

Color Group: Green Group

This is a quiz that was found in the Sunday January 3 2010 Concord Monitor newspaper…. Answers are there, too.  You need to read the question, and… if you KNOW the correct answer, that’s good… but you must still VERIFY that correct answer.  And write out your source for that correct answer.  And, MOST importantly, I want to you also write out your thinking process- especially for the questions you do NOT know the answer to.  Can you eliminate any of the answers?  How?   And how did you search for the correct answer?  Did you search the QUESTION, or did you search the possible answers?

Write it out!  Be complete.  A good paragraph per answer is what we are after here…

1.      What are the three places that make up the points of the Bermuda Triangle?

a.       Bahamas, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico

b.      Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and Tortola

c.       Miami, Bermuda, Puerto Rico

I decided that I would use google to search for the answer of this question. I am choosing google because I am very familiar with it and it is the first search engine that comes to mind. While searching I’m going to use the words Bermuda, Triangle, three points, and location. I found 156,000 results. I searched through the first few snippets until I found one I wanted to read it was:   http://www.worldatlas.com/aatlas/infopage/bermudat.htm.

I also found a map on the website so I could confirm what I was reading. I found that the right answer was C, Miami, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico.

  1. Recife is the popular, pretty capital of Pernambuco state in what country?

a.       Italy

b.      Spain

c.       Brazil

I decided to use dog pile. My reasoning behind this decision is I like the name of the search engine, I’ve never used it, and I want to see how well it works. I knew what the answer was before I searched, but just to verify my knowledge I am going to search it. While searching the key words I am going to use are capital, country, and Recife.  While searching I found a verity of websites, one that I saw to be information was: http://www.brazil.org.za/recife.html. It stated that C, Brazil, is the right answer.

  1. Historic Nara, Japan, celebrates a huge anniversary in 2010.  How old is the country’s first capital city?

a.       570 years  (in 2010)

b.      1,300 years   (in 2010)

c.       4,000 years   (in 2010)

I am going to use Bing. I don’t like Bing, the reason I am using Bing though is because I’m supposed to use more than one search engine. I have no idea what the answer is, I will make a guess and say the answer is b because it seems reasonable, not to long ago, not to recent. I am going to use Nara, Japan, capitol city for my search words. When I looked up these words images and information pops up. 3,250,000 results came up. I looked through the snippets until I found a reasonable website, this is the link, http://web-japan.org/atlas/historical/his12.html. It stated that the answer was b. 1,300 years

  1. The Northern Pacific Gyre lies in the Pacific Ocean between Japan and the west coast of the United States. What does it contain?

a.       A huge pod of an estimated 2,000 endangered gray whales

b.      A giant debris field of garbage trapped in a spinning circle

c.       An underground sea mountain 7 miles tall

I am going to use ix quick because it sounds very safe. I have no idea I’m guessing b though, I don’t even know why. I will use the words north pacific gyre. Nothing happened while I was typing. Lots of results came up, the exact number was not stated though. I scrolled through until I found a website I trust, national geographic. This is the link, http://education.nationalgeographic.org/encyclopedia/great-pacific-garbage-patch/. It states that b is the right answer. It is a mound of trash that keeps growing because the current circling around it keeps it in place and keeps collection more.

  1. This year (in 2010)  a mosaic of an angel was discovered under the floor of the Hagia Sophia.  Where and what is the Hagia Sophia?

a.       Istanbul, Turkey.  It’s a museum that previously was a Byzantine Christian Church and a mosque.

b.      Luxembourg.  It’s a cathedral built to honor St. Sophia, the country’s patron saint.

c.       Mexico City.  It’s a traditional market where the image of the angel is said to have healing powers.

For number 5 we are going to do things differently. We are going to use 4 different search engines and compare the results. I am going to use google, ix quick, dogpile, and WebCrawler.  I think I know the answer, just a wild guess, a. I am going to use the words Hagia Sophia. When I searched it in google many things popped up. In ix quick I had to click search before anything happened, the same goes for WebCrawler. Dogpile came up with Hagia Sophia as soon as I had “hagi” typed in. I got the same websites pop up. One that looks trust worthy is live science, this is the link, http://www.livescience.com/27574-hagia-sophia.html. The other was, http://www.hagiasophia.com/. They both stated that a was indeed the right answer.

  1. If you want to go whitewater rafting on the Kampar River, where do you have to go?

a.       Wheeling, West Virginia.

b.      Gopeng, Malaysia

c.       Johannesburg, South Africa

For this question I am going to use google, the reason is because Mr. Woolner said I should use google for this one. I have no clue what the answer might be and I’m not even going to guess. We are also going to do an advanced search…… but not the gear, we are going to limit the domain results. The key words I will be using are Kampar, river, and location. I decided to limit it to .com sites. I looked through and found a website that mentioned it was located in Indonesia at this website http://peacefullbianca.blogspot.com/2013/09/sungai-kampar.html.  I used my background knowledge of the world and put together that Malaysia is near Indonesia so I added the word Malaysia to my search to just reinforce my guess, I found that b is indeed the answer.

  1. Most tourists love Devonshire cream tea – scones, clotted cream and raspberry jam with tea.  But where in England is Devonshire?

a.       In dairy country east of London

b.      Southwest England

c.       Near the Scottish border

I will use google again. Why am I using google? I honestly don’t know, I guess it’s just the first search engine that comes to my mind. I limited it to .com because I get the most results in and usually they work very well. My key words I will use are Devonshire, location and perhaps England.  Plenty of results came up I found a great website, here is the link, http://where-is.biz/index.php?qcountry_code=GB&qregion_code=D4&qcity=Devonshire. It shows a map with Devonshire labeled on it. I noticed it is in southwest England.

  1. What and where are the Adirondacks?

a.       The Amish region in Indiana where craftsmen make chairs

b.      Mountain range in New York state

c.       American Indian reservations in the Florida Everglades

I will use google again because I am very familiar with it. I already know the answer but I will clarify my knowledge by searching it.  My key words will be Adirondacks and maybe I will include location. I’m going to limit it to just .com sites. I found one for tourists but it gave me the information I needed. http://visitadirondacks.com/. Is the website. It told me that the answer is B.

  1. Most people just call the region the Caribbean, but what is its formal name?

a.       The West Indies

b.      The East Indies

c.       The South Indies

I will use google again. I think I am going to use google foe now on out. I already know the answer, it’s a, but just to verify I will search it up using the key words, formal name for region of the Caribbean. I looked through the snippets and West Indies came up multiple times. One website that looks good also say they ar5e the West Indies, here is the link http://www.britannica.com/place/West-Indies-island-group-Atlantic-Ocean. The answer is a.

  1. Almost all tourists who visit the Galapagos Islands leave for their trip from what city?

a.       Quito, Ecuador

b.      Santiago, Chile

c.       La Paz, Bolivia

I’m using google. The key words I will use are Galapagos Island. This link http://www.galapagosislandsspanishschool.com/how-to-get-to-galapagos.html. States that a is the right answer. I notices that most websites you have to search around for the answer. With this one I got the answer within the first 5 sentences. The website I found was a good one. It was for travel purposes but it still works.

  1. What was the United States’ first national park?

a.       Great Smoky Mountain

b.      Yellowstone

c.       Yosemite

I already know the answer to this question, its yellow stone. I will use google to verify what I already know. I will use the key words, United States first national park. I was right it is yellow stone, this website proves it https://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gmdhtml/yehtml/yeabout.html. It states that indeed Yellowstone national park was the very first national park in the United States. The reason I knew the answer to this question was because in 3rd grade we did a project on nation parks, I am thankful for that now.
