This is a quiz that was found in the Sunday January 3 2010 Concord Monitor newspaper…. Answers are there, too.  You need to read the question, and… if you KNOW the correct answer, that’s good… but you must still VERIFY that correct answer.  And write out your source for that correct answer.  And, MOST importantly, I want to you also write out your thinking process- especially for the questions you do NOT know the answer to.  Can you eliminate any of the answers?  How?   And how did you search for the correct answer?  Did you search the QUESTION, or did you search the possible answers?

Write it out!  Be complete.  A good paragraph per answer is what we are after here…

1.      What are the three places that make up the points of the Bermuda Triangle?

    1. Bahamas, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico
    2. Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and Tortola
    3. Miami, Bermuda, Puerto Rico

I am going to use the search engine Google. I am using this search engine because I have always relied on google and it has images to help.

I believe the right answer is a, because it sounds correct from what I’ve heard in the past…I am going to use the key words Bermuda Triangle, and location. I typed the key words into the search box, but the words jumped up into a different box. Then I scrolled through the snippets and decided to look at the http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2014/01/myth-bermuda-triangle/ page. I found out that the answer was actually c. Miami, Bermuda and Puerto Rico. It didn’t turn out to be my choice of a.

  1. Recife is the popular, pretty capital of Pernambuco state in what country?

    1. Italy
    2. Spain
    3. Brazil

I am going to use a different search engine this time. I have decided to go with DuckDuckGo. I chose this because it sounded cool, and it sounds like it could hold a lot of info. Some important key words are capital, Pernambuco and country. I will use these words to search with. But first I must make an inference. I have decided to go with Brazil, because in my opinion, it sounds like a Brazilian name. Interesting enough, as soon as I typed in Pernambuco, terms began to fill into the search bar. It predicted what I was looking for. I used this http://www.brazil.org.za/pernambuco.html  so sure enough the answer to this question would be c. Brazil.

  1. Historic Nara, Japan, celebrates a huge anniversary in 2010.  How old is the country’s first capital city?

    1. 570 years  (in 2010)
    2. 1,300 years   (in 2010)
    3. 4,000 years   (in 2010)

I am going to use a different search engine again! I have decided to go with Bing, because it is a really popular search engine and I feel I can get good information out of it. I am going to use the search terms Nara, Japan and capital city. My guess would probably be 1,300 because it sounds logic. 570 is kind of small, and 4,000 is pretty big, so I feel that 1,300 will most likely be the answer. I am going to search to find out for sure. I searched in Bing, and found this… http://web-japan.org/atlas/historical/his12.html . It told me for sure and I was right. It was b. 1,300.

  1. The Northern Pacific Gyre lies in the Pacific Ocean between Japan and the west coast of the United States. What does it contain?

    1. A huge pod of an estimated 2,000 endangered gray whales
    2. A giant debris field of garbage trapped in a spinning circle
    3. An underground sea mountain 7 miles tall

I am going to use ANOTHER search engine. I have decided to use the engine that hasn’t been used in quite a while. Web Crawler. I am going to use some key words during the process of my searching. Northern pacific, between Japan and United States and Gyre. I feel that the answer is b. I think this because I remember hearing it from someone earlier, and it stuck with me. So I believe it’s going to be b. I searched up my key words, and it came up! I looked into the link. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Pacific_garbage_patch and found out that it actually is b. I was relieved to find out that I was right about the garbage and seaweed swirling in the pacific.

  1. This year (in 2010)  a mosaic of an angel was discovered under the floor of the Hagia Sophia.  Where and what is the Hagia Sophia?

    1. Istanbul, Turkey.  It’s a museum that previously was a Byzantine Christian Church and a mosque.
    2. Luxembourg.  It’s a cathedral built to honor St. Sophia, the country’s patron saint.
    3. Mexico City.  It’s a traditional market where the image of the angel is said to have healing powers.

We are going to do this question in very, very, very different way. We are going to compare search engines. We are going to use 4 different search engines. I am going to use Google, DuckDuckGo, Bing and Ixquick. I have an idea of this answer being Turkey. I studied Turkey in school, so I feel that Turkey is a good answer. But I can’t be sure. So I am going to go to the search engines to find out. While I was typing in Google, it came up with the terms I wanted after the first word. Every sight basically gave me the same answer in a different way. Some were more descriptive than others, but they all gave me reasonable answers for websites. As the snippet titles were different they all held unique information for each different engine. So far I haven’t come up with the answer, but it appears to look like Turkey. It used to be a church. Here are my links… http://www.hagiasophia.com/ , http://www.livescience.com/27574-hagia-sophia.html , http://www.sacred-destinations.com/turkey/istanbul-hagia-sophia , http://www.teslasociety.com/hagiasophia.htm. The cool thing is, some of the same links showed up on different engines. The answer was a. Turkey.

  1. If you want to go whitewater rafting on the Kampar River, where do you have to go?

    1. Wheeling, West Virginia.
    2. Gopeng, Malaysia
    3. Johannesburg, South Africa

We are going to be doing something different. We are going to limit the search using site: tricks. I am going to use Google for this one. I am going to use the following key words. Whitewater rafting, Kampar River and where. I have come to the answer of Malaysia. As soon as I used site:, it brought up what I wanted. I typed edu, and it came up with sites that are edu that had to go with it. This was the site… http://seasiavisions.library.cornell.edu/?f%5Bauthor_tesim%5D%5B%5D=Skeat%2C+Walter+William&f%5Bimage_format_tesim%5D%5B%5D=drawings&f%5Bimage_geo_tesim%5D%5B%5D=+Malaysia--West+Malaysia--Perak--Changat+Bertam+%7C+Malaysia--West+Malaysia--Perak--Kampar+River&page=5 that I found. So the answer was b. Gopeng Malaysia.

    1. In dairy country east of London
    2. Southwest England
    3. Near the Scottish Border

I am going to use the site: AGAIN! Only this time, instead of .edu, I am going to use .com. And instead of Google, I am going to use Bing. Only for this one, I can’t use the site:*. I can only use site: If I were to make an educated guess, it would have to be near the Scottish border. But I can’t be sure. I am going to use these key words. Tourists, Devonshire cream tea and England. http://www.heartofdevon.com/food-and-drink/devon-cream-teas This is the site that I found and it turns out, I was wrong. The answer is actually b. Southwest England.

    2. Mountain range in New York state
    3. American Indian reservations in the Florida Everglades

AGAIN, I am going to use the site: but I am going to use .edu again. I am going to use the search engine of Duckduckgo. I will use the key words Adirondacks, location, and description. I came out with an answer of… http://courses.hamilton.edu/forests-of-the-adirondack-park/location-of-old-growth-forests and I came out with a final answer of b. A mountain range in New York state.

  1. Most people just call the region the Caribbean, but what is its formal name?

    1. The West Indies
    2. The East Indies
    3. The South Indies

I once again will use the site: to find my answer. I am going to use .org this time. And for a search engine I will use google.com. The West Indies would most certainly be my guess. I assume this because I did a project once on the West Indies and I believe it’s in the Caribbean. But that was a while ago, so in order to be sure I will use these key words. Caribbean, formal and name. I came to this link… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caribbean and the answer came out to be a. The West Indies.
