This is a quiz that was found in the Sunday January 3 2010 Concord Monitor newspaper…. Answers are there, too. You need to read the question, and… if you KNOW the correct answer, that’s good… but you must still VERIFY that correct answer. And write out your source for that correct answer. And, MOST importantly, I want to you also write out your thinking process- especially for the questions you do NOT know the answer to. Can you eliminate any of the answers? How? And how did you search for the correct answer? Did you search the QUESTION, or did you search the possible answers?
Write it out! Be complete. A good paragraph per answer is what we are after here…

1. What are the three places that make up the points of the Bermuda Triangle?
I am going to use the search engine Google. I am using Google because I like to use Google to search information. I think that b is the correct answer because those places are near each other. I am going to use the key words Bermuda, Triangle, and location. When I opened Google, I typed the key words that I was going to use and I got many results. I got a little box that had some information but I wasn’t sure if it was true so I kept looking. I came across a website that looked trustworthy and I found out the correct answer. This is the website that I used: http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/bermudatri.html. The correct answer is c. Miami, Bermuda and Puerto Rico.
I am going to use the search engine Bing. I am going to use Bing this time because I used Google on the last question and I have to use a different one. I think the correct answer is c. Brazil because the names of the state and capital name sounds like a Brazil name. I am going to use the search terms Pernambuco and capital. When I started to type Pernambuco, it started to fill in what I might want to type. It came up with a box that had some brief information about Pernambuco. When I enter my search, I got many results for websites related to Pernambuco and capital. I got a total of 2,310,000 results. Here is the website that I decided to use: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pernambuco. After reading through, I found the results the Pernambuco is in the country of Brazil. So the correct answer is c. Brazil.
I am going to use the search engine Duck Duck Go. I am going to use this one because I haven’t use it yet and Mr. Woolner told us that we have to use a different search engine. I am going to use the search terms Nara, Japan, anniversary and 2010. I think the right answer the right number is b. 1,300 years because it seems like a reasonable number because it is not too young or too old. When I enter my search terms, I found many results that go with my search terms. I eventually found a website to use. This is what I used: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/03/travel/03headsup.html?_r=0. After reading some of the article, I found out the right answer. The right answer is b. 1,300 years (in 2010).
I am using a different search engine that I haven’t used yet. I am using ixquick. I think that the correct answer is b. a giant debris field of garbage trapped in a spinning circle. I am making a total guess because I have no idea what the answer might be. The search terms that I am going to use are Northern Pacific Gyre. When I entered my search terms, I got results but I noticed that some of them had stars next to them. I assumed that it meant that they were recommended. The website that I used was: http://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/earth/oceanography/great-pacific-garbage-patch.htm. Once I read some of the article I found out the answer. The right answer is b. a giant debris field of garbage trapped in a spinning circle.
We are going to this question in a very, very, very, very, different way. We are going to compare different search engine. I am going to compare Google, Bing, Duck Duck Go and ixquick. I think the answer might be a. because I am totally guessing the answer. I am going to use the search terms Hagia and Sophia. On Google, I got 7,280,000 results and on Bing I got 612,000 results. On the other search engines, it didn’t show a total of results that I got. On every single search engine, the first website that I got was Wikipedia. A website that came up on every single search engine was the website that I decided to use which is http://www.hagiasophia.com/. After reading, I found the answer on the website. The correct answer is a. Istanbul, Turkey. It’s a museum that previously was a Byzantine Christian Church and a mosque.
We are about to start 6. We have decided to do something different. We are going to limit the search using site: tricks. I am going to use the search engine Google. I am going to use the search terms Kampar, River, and rafting. I think the correct answer is c. Johannesburg, South Africa because it sounds like something that would be in South Africa. When I searched, I got all .com websites because that was what I searched for. I found a website that gave me the answer. This is the website that I used: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kampar_River. The correct answer is b. Gopeng, Malaysia.
I am going to be doing the same thing that I did in question 6. I am going to use site: tricks with my search. I think that the answer to the question is c. Near the Scottish Border because I am totally guessing. I am going to use the search terms Devonshire and England. I am also going to use the search engine Google because I like Google. After searching for .org websites with the site: tricks. I found a website that gave me the answer. Here is the website: http://wikitravel.org/en/Devon. The correct answer is b. Southwest England.
Once again, I am doing the same thing with the site: tricks with my search terms. I am going to use Google as my search engine. I am going to use the search term Adirondacks. I am also searching for .com sites. I think the right answer is b. Mountain Range in New York State. When I started to searched, it came up with some hotel/traveling sites for tourist but then I add the site: trick and I found I website. This is the website that I decided to use: http://visitadirondacks.com/. After reading some of the article, I found out that the answer was b. Mountain range in New York State.
I am going to use the search engine Bing and I am going to do a site: trick. I think that the correct answer is going to be b. The East Indies. I am going to use the search term Caribbean and name. When I searched my terms that I want to use plus the trick, I got a couple of results that had to do with the Pirates of the Caribbean characters names in the movie. When I found a website that didn’t have to do with the movies, I read the article and it gave me the answer https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caribbean. The correct answer is a. The West Indies
I am going to use the search engine Google and I am going to use a site: trick. I have no idea what the answer might be so I am going to guess. My guess is a. Quito, Ecuador. I am going to use the search terms Galapagos, Islands and tourists. After searching with my search terms and the trick, I got many results. Many of the results were traveling website on where to book a hotel or a cruise or something like that. I eventually found a website and after reading, I found the right answer. Here is a link to the website: http://www.galapagos.org/travel/travel/planning-a-trip/. The website says things about how there are some airports in Ecuador and that it is very busy with tourists from Ecuador. The correct answer is a. Quito, Ecuador.
I am going to use the search engine Duck Duck Go. I am going to also use the site: trick. I think that the correct answer is b. Yellowstone because I am almost positive that it is the correct answer. I am going to use the search terms United, States, first and park. When I used the site trick on Duck Duck Go, it didn’t come up with any results so I had to get rid of * symbol because it didn’t work for some reason. After fixing that problem, I found a website that was all about the history of the first national park. Here is the link to the site: http://history1800s.about.com/od/thegildedage/a/first-national-park.htm. The United States first national park is b. Yellowstone.
I am going to use the search engine Google because I really like Google. Additionally, I am going to use the site: trick once again. I have no idea what the answer might be so I am going to guess that the correct answer is c. Lanai.
