Sub-title- A Project About “Searching” for the Correct Information.

First Name: Ian H.

 Color Group: Blue

This is a quiz that was found in the Sunday January 3 2010 Concord Monitor newspaper…. Answers are there, too.  You need to read the question, and… if you KNOW the correct answer, that’s good… but you must still VERIFY that correct answer.  And write out your source for that correct answer.  And, MOST importantly, I want to you also write out your thinking process- especially for the questions you do NOT know the answer to.  Can you eliminate any of the answers?  How?   And how did you search for the correct answer?  Did you search the QUESTION, or did you search the possible answers?

Write it out!  Be complete.  A good paragraph per answer is what we are after here…

1.      What are the three places that make up the points of the Bermuda Triangle?

    1. Bahamas, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico
    2. Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and Tortola
    3. Miami, Bermuda, Puerto Rico

I am going to use the Google Search Engine. I am going to use this, because it comes up in my browser and I also use google the most. I think the answer is Bahamas, Bermuda and Puerto Rico. I will search for the correct answer to double check. The actual correct answer is C Miami, Bermuda, Puerto Rico. My search terms were…Bermuda triangle location. Several websites were listed.

  1. Recife is the popular, pretty capital of Pernambuco state in what country?

    1. Italy
    2. Spain
    3. Brazil

I am going to use a different search engine. Now I am going to use Wikipedia because I have to do something other than google and it’s the first search engine that came to mind. I already know the answer it is Brazil but I double checked anyways. My search terms were “Pernambuco location” and then I found out it was Brazil. I started typing “Pernam” and it came up with a ton of answers before I even finished typing.

  1. Historic Nara, Japan, celebrates a huge anniversary in 2010.  How old is the country’s first capital city?

    1. 570 years  (in 2010)
    2. 1,300 years   (in 2010)
    3. 4,000 years   (in 2010)

I am going to use Bing for my new search engine because I have never used it and I am willing to find out if it’s good. My guess is going to be B. because it’s sort of in the middle of both A and C so I’m just going for the middle number just because. So I found out it is 1,300 right of the bat I just read a little further and made sure it was 1,300.

  1. The Northern Pacific Gyre lies in the Pacific Ocean between Japan and the west coast of the United States. What does it contain?

    1. A huge pod of an estimated 2,000 endangered gray whales
    2. A giant debris field of garbage trapped in a spinning circle
    3. An underground sea mountain 7 miles tall

I am going to use duckduckgo.com because it sounds funny and I’ve never used it in my whole life. My guess is going to be B. My search terms were Northern Pacific Gyre and it came up with Garbage Patch so I figured that it would be B instead of the other possibilities. I read a little bit more on the article and finally found out it was B for sure.

  1. This year (in 2010)  a mosaic of an angel was discovered under the floor of the Hagia Sophia.  Where and what is the Hagia Sophia?

    1. Istanbul, Turkey.  It’s a museum that previously was a Byzantine Christian Church and a mosque.
    2. Luxembourg.  It’s a cathedral built to honor St. Sophia, the country’s patron saint.
    3. Mexico City.  It’s a traditional market where the image of the angel is said to have healing powers.

We are going to use 4 different search engines comparing them. The search engines I will be using  Google, Bing, Dogpile and duckduckgo.com I am using these 4 search engines because I have to and also Mr.Woolner our teacher is making us. My search terms were Hagia Sophia location on Google and pressed entered then it came up with Sultanhmet Mh, Faith/Istanbul, Turkey. A was my original guess but I searched it on google to double check as always. So the answer is A.

  1. If you want to go whitewater rafting on the Kampar River, where do you have to go?

    1. Wheeling, West Virginia.
    2. Gopeng, Malaysia
    3. Johannesburg, South Africa

I am going to use Google for this advanced search trick. I am going to try to limit the domain to .com or .net or even edu. My search terms are going to be Kampar River. But for the advanced search your going to have to do Kampar River site:*.com or edu or maybe even .gov. So I’m going to use edu at first but if it doesn’t work I’ll use .gov. or .net. I found out that the answer is Gopeng, Malaysia by reading down the article I used .com instead of edu.

    2. Southwest England

I am going to also use Google for the advanced search this time I’m going to use .com again. I came up with the answer B which is Southwest England. My search terms were where in England is Devonshire site:*.com so after I read an article about it and said it came up with Southwest England.

  1. What and where are the Adirondacks?

    1. The Amish region in Indiana where craftsmen make chairs
    2. Mountain range in New York state
    3. American Indian reservations in the Florida Everglades

I’m going to use the advanced search once again. .com has been working for me so that’s what I’ll use. I think I already know the answer, my guess is B, Mountain range in New York state I have a camp up in the Adirondacks so I’m pretty confident. My search terms are going to be where are the Adirondacks located site:*.com. I came up with the answer Northern New York so my guess was right. The word Adirondacks originates from a derogatory term given to the Algonquin tribe by neighboring Mohawk, meaningbarkeaters
