Sub-title- A Project about “Searching” for the Correct Information.

First Name L.I : Hayden L

Date: March 14-18, 2016

 Color: Yellow Group

This is a quiz that was found in the Sunday January 3 2010 Concord Monitor newspaper…. Answers are there, too.  You need to read the question, and… if you KNOW the correct answer, that’s good… but you must still VERIFY that correct answer.  And write out your source for that correct answer.  And, MOST importantly, I want to you also write out your thinking process- especially for the questions you do NOT know the answer to.  Can you eliminate any of the answers?  How?   And how did you search for the correct answer?  Did you search the QUESTION, or did you search the possible answers?

Write it out!  Be complete.  A good paragraph per answer is what we are after here…

1.      What are the three places that make up the points of the Bermuda Triangle?

    1. Bahamas, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico
    2. Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and Tortola
    3. Miami, Bermuda, Puerto Rico

I am going to use the search engine Google. I’m going to use Google because it is one of my favorites and I like to look at the photo of the day. I think the correct answer is “a” because it is more in the ocean than the other answers. I am going to use the key words Bermuda Triangle and location. I typed the key words into the search box but the words went into a different box. Then I scrolled through the snippets and decided to go to the .com. On that page I found my answer. http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2014/01/myth-bermuda-triangle/  the correct answer is c. Miami, Bermuda, Puerto Rico

  1. Recife is the popular, pretty capital of Pernambuco state in what country?

    1. Italy
    2. Spain
    3. Brazil

I am going to use a different search engine this time, I have chosen Duck Duck Go. I am going to use this search engine because I have never used it before and I’ve heard good things about it. I also think the name is cool and clever. This search engine also doesn’t track you, or your searches. I will use the keywords Pernambuco and Capital. I think that the answer is c. Brazil because Pernambuco is a tropical wood. Also the name sounds like a Brazilian name. Interesting as soon as I began typing the engine began to predict what I was going to type. I scrolled through the first page of snippets and selected Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pernambuco  The correct answer is c. Brazil.

  1. Historic Nara, Japan, celebrates a huge anniversary in 2010.  How old is the country’s first capital city?

    1. 570 years  (in 2010)
    2. 1,300 years   (in 2010)
    3. 4,000 years   (in 2010)

I will use a different type of search engine. I am going to use www.ixquick.com. I am going to try this one, because I have never used it before. Also Mr. Woolner claimed it was a good one. My key words are Nara, Japan and capital city. I think that the answer might be “b”, because it is a old number but not a really old number. As I typed my search terms nothing popped up to predict my search. After scrolling through the snippets I chose a site that said that Nara, Japan was 1,300 years old. So, the right answer is b. 1,300 years as of 2010. http://web-japan.org/atlas/historical/his12.html

  1. The Northern Pacific Gyre lies in the Pacific Ocean between Japan and the west coast of the United States. What does it contain?

    1. A huge pod of an estimated 2,000 endangered gray whales
    2. A giant debris field of garbage trapped in a spinning circle
    3. An underground sea mountain 7 miles tall

    1. I will now use a different search engine. The search engine I have chosen is Bing, I chose this because I haven’t used it before and the background images are really cool. I think that the answer may be “b”. My keywords are going to be Northern Pacific Gyre. Instantly, before I even typed Bing began to predict what I was going to say. Once I search I scrolled through the snippets and selected a site. The site says that there is a large mass a garbage floating in the northern pacific. So, the correct answer is “b. A giant debris field of garbage trapped in a spinning circle”

  1. This year (in 2010) a mosaic of an angel was discovered under the floor of the Hagia Sophia.  Where and what is the Hagia Sophia?

    1. Istanbul, Turkey.  It’s a museum that previously was a Byzantine Christian Church and a mosque.
    2. Luxembourg.  It’s a cathedral built to honor St. Sophia, the country’s patron saint.
    3. Mexico City.  It’s a traditional market where the image of the angel is said to have healing powers.

We are going to this question in a very different way, by comparing four different search engines. I am going to use Google, Web crawler, Duck Duck Go, and ixquic. I have no clue what the answer may be. My keywords will be Hagia and Sophia. Even though Duck Duck Go doesn’t track me, it does track searches. Throughout the search engines Google was one of the only sites that predicted what I was going to type. While the other search engines didn’t. Also the first few websites to pop up were travel sites. All the search engines provided great snippets and good sites. On Duck Duck Go I visted a site and it said that the answer is a. Istanbul, Turkey.  It’s a museum that previously was a Byzantine Christian Church and a mosque. https://tricivenola.wordpress.com/tag/angel-in-hagia-sophia/

  1. If you want to go whitewater rafting on the Kampar River, where do you have to go?

    1. Wheeling, West Virginia.
    2. Gopeng, Malaysia
    3. Johannesburg, South Africa

We are about to start number 6. For this number we are going to do something different, by narrowing the search. To do this we are going to do site : tricks. I’m going to use the keywords Kampar, location and river. The browser I am using is know as Duck Duck Go. To do the site: trick you type your keywords, then site with a colon. You then type a dot than the domain you want to pop up. I visited this site, http://landsat.usgs.gov/L8Slideshow.php , and found that the answer is b. Gopeng, Malaysia.

  1. Most tourists love Devonshire cream tea – scones, clotted cream and raspberry jam with tea.  But where in England is Devonshire?

    1. In dairy country east of London
    2. Southwest England
    3. Near the Scottish border

I am going to do the colon trick again, except instead of a .gov, I’m going to do a .com. I’ve chosen to use Bing as my search engine. I think that the answer may be “a”, but I could always be wrong. I have chosen to use the keywords Devonshire, England, and location. Before I began to type, Bing began to predict what I was trying to type. I searched and found this .com site, http://www.gomapper.com/travel/where-is/devon-england-united-kingdom-located.html . This site showed a map that showed that the answer is b. Southwest England.

    1. The Amish region in Indiana where craftsmen make chairs
    2. Mountain range in New York state
    3. American Indian reservations in the Florida Everglades

For this question, I am going to go back to the site: trick. For this one though I am going to use .org. I think that the answer is going to be “b”. So, my keywords are Adirondacks and location. My search engine is going to be Google. So, before I even began to type Google began to predict my typing. I visted this site, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adirondack_Mountains and found that the answer is b. Mountain range in New York state.

    1. The West Indies
    2. The East Indies
    3. The South Indies

Yet again, I am going to do the site: trick. So this time I am going to do a .com site. I think that the answer is a. The West Indies, because we did reading and questions in the textbook about this region. For my keywords I am going to use Formal, name, and Caribbean region. My search engine is going to be Google. I have chosen Google because I have used it many times before. Also I trust Google for my searches. When scrolling through the snippets I found this, “What countries are in the west indies?”. https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#safe=strict&q=Formal+name+of+caribbean+region+site:*.com   This is what Google said. So, the answer is b.The East Indies.
