Red Well read D2B3
This is a quiz that was found in the Sunday January 3 2010 Concord Monitor newspaper…. Answers are there, too. You need to read the question, and… if you KNOW the correct answer, that’s good… but you must still VERIFY that correct answer. And write out your source for that correct answer. And, MOST importantly, I want to you also write out your thinking process- especially for the questions you do NOT know the answer to. Can you eliminate any of the answers? How? And how did you search for the correct answer? Did you search the QUESTION, or did you search the possible answers?
Write it out! Be complete. A good paragraph per answer is what we are after here…

1. What are the three places that make up the points of the Bermuda Triangle?
I am going to use the search engine Dogpile. I am going to use this search engine because I have never used before. I think the answer is A, I think this because they are all in the same area. I am going to use keywords… Bermuda, Triangle, Map. I looked at all of the snippets on the first page and I decided to use http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2002/12/1205_021205_bermudatriangle.html
This had the correct answer, C. Miami, Bermuda, Puerto Rico.
I am going to use a different search engine this time, I think I will use Google. I will use google because I use it all the time and I know how to use it. I think the correct answer is I think the answer is C., because I studied Brazil in 6th grade and I know that there is a town called Pernambuco. Right as I typed the first couple of letters the results popped up with snippets. I decided to use https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recife to find the answer. This website had the correct answer. The correct answer is C. I guessed correctly.
I am going to use a different search engine this time… This one doesn’t track anything. Ixqwick.com. I am using this because Mr. Woolner said to. I think the answer is not C because that’s too old. China is the oldest county in the world and it is about 4000 years old. I think the answer is B. I noticed that nothing happened when I type. When you hit go, you get results. I scrolled through the first page of snippets and I selected the lonely planet website. This did not have the answer. So, I went to http://soulofthegarden.com/Japan.html and found my answer there. I had to do the math to find out how many years it was capital. It said it was the capital from 710 to 2010. That equals 1,300 years. The answer is B. My guess was right.
For the fourth question I am going to use the search engine WWW Journey. I will use this because Nick Simpkins, (someone in our grade) created it. Although it goes to duck duck go, I am still going to use it. I think the answer is going to be B, because people litter all the time. I used the keywords Northern Pacific Gyre and tons of snippets came up with answers. I clicked on one called SCRIBOL.com this came up with the answer. The link to this website is http://scribol.com/environment/waste-and-recycling/the-north-pacific-gyre-100-million-tons-of-garbage-and-growing as you can see, the answer to the question is even in the link. The website says the answer is B. My guess was right
We are going to do this one differently. We are going to try to use four search engines and compare them. I will try WWW Journey (DuckDuckGo), Google, Dogpile, and Ixqwick. I think the answer is A. I will use the keywords Hagia Sophia to do my search. In WWW Journey, and Ixqwick don’t give results when you type. Dogpile, and Google have popups of what it thinks I will search or my recent searches. The snippet I used said Hagia Sophia is in Istanbul, Turkey (answer A). I used the snippet https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hagia_Sophia and got the right answer. I even guessed the right answer.
For this one, we will do an advanced search. First, I will use Google. I am going to use Google because Mr.Woolner is telling us to. I think the answer is B because I am making a guess. I will use the search terms Kampar River. We used the :*.edu to search for just edu sites. There are only about 1,500 snippets when there used to be 450,000. I decided to use the website http://seasiavisions.library.cornell.edu/?f%5Bauthor_tesim%5D%5B%5D=Skeat%2C+Walter+William&f%5Bimage_format_tesim%5D%5B%5D=drawings&f%5Bimage_geo_tesim%5D%5B%5D=+Malaysia--West+Malaysia--Perak--Changat+Bertam+%7C+Malaysia--West+Malaysia--Perak--Kampar+River&page=5 although this website is not very factual, it still had the answer. The correct answer is B. I am good at guessing, I guess.
For this question I am going to use an advanced search using Bing. I am going to use the .org for this one. It looks like Bing doesn’t do advanced searches. Once I searched site:*.org after my keywords, No results came up. My keywords were Devonshire England. Instead of Bing I will use Duckduckgo. It seems that Duckduckgo doesn’t do advanced searches either. As I was deleting the search I decided to do the search without a Colin. It worked. I decided to use the snippet link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devon . This had the answer B.
For this question I am going to search for a .com website. I will use google to search for my answer. I will use the keyword Adirondacks. When I searched for the answer, tons of snippets and ads popped up. I decided to click on the first website which was http://visitadirondacks.com/. The answer was right under the title. B. The Adirondacks are mountains in New York.
For this question I will do another advanced search. But, this time I will use a .net website. I will also use the Yahoo to search for my answer the question. I will use the keywords Caribbean formal name. Nothing came up. Now I will just use google because we are running out of time and I know how to use it. I clicked on a snippet with the link of www.royalcaribbeanblog.net/ it came up with a .com website. http://www.royalcaribbeanblog.com/. It said the answer was A.
