This is a quiz that was found in the Sunday January 3 2010 Concord Monitor newspaper…. Answers are there, too.  You need to read the question, and… if you KNOW the correct answer, that’s good… but you must still VERIFY that correct answer.  And write out your source for that correct answer.  And, MOST importantly, I want to you also write out your thinking process- especially for the questions you do NOT know the answer to.  Can you eliminate any of the answers?  How?   And how did you search for the correct answer?  Did you search the QUESTION, or did you search the possible answers?

Write it out!  Be complete.  A good paragraph per answer is what we are after here…

1.      What are the three places that make up the points of the Bermuda Triangle?

    1. Bahamas, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico
    2. Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and Tortola
    3. Miami, Bermuda, Puerto Rico

This is an image of the Bermuda Triangle that I found on Google by searching: Bermuda Triangle.

I am going to use Google for my search engine. This is because it is the first one that I think of when I need to research something. Also, I am not quite familiar with other browsers because in my lifetime I have only used Google. I am going to use the keywords: Bermuda, triangle, locations. 235,000 results came up. I chose a .gov site that I found after I scrolled through the first few snippets. On this website: http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/bermudatri.html I found a picture of a map with the correct answer. Using that map, I figured out that the correct answer is C: Miami, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico

  1. Recife is the popular, pretty capital of Pernambuco state in what country?

    1. Italy
    2. Spain
    3. Brazil

For this question I am going to research the answer on Dogpile. I chose this search engine because I’ve never used it before, and I want to see how different it is from Google. To complete my search, I am going to use the keywords: Pernambuco, country. Multiple pages of website came up, but the search engine didn’t tell me how many. I chose a website: http://www.brazil.org.za/pernambuco.html  halfway down the page, and found a paragraph about Pernambuco. It was talking about how it was in Brazil, and at the bottom of the paragraph it mentioned how Recife is its capital city. That concludes the correct answer: B: Brazil!!!

  1. Historic Nara, Japan, celebrates a huge anniversary in 2010.  How old is the country’s first capital city?

    1. 570 years  (in 2010)
    2. 1,300 years   (in 2010)
    3. 4,000 years   (in 2010)

For this question, I am going to use a third search engine. I’m going to use duckduckgo. I’m using this because I have also yet never used it or even heard of it before I did this project! I have no idea what the correct answer, but I will make a guess that it’s not A. 570 years is not that old. Some keywords that I’m going to use for this question are: Nara, Japan, and Capital City. When I typed Nara, Japan, Capital, City; things popped up, but not things that I had searched before. So it doesn’t track who does a search, but it saves the most popular things that people had searched. After searching with those keywords, I found a website that seemed like I’d give me an answer: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2132.html The correct answer turned out to be B: 1,300 years ago that Nara was the capital in Japan.

  1. The Northern Pacific Gyre lies in the Pacific Ocean between Japan and the west coast of the United States. What does it contain?

    1. A huge pod of an estimated 2,000 endangered gray whales
    2. A giant debris field of garbage trapped in a spinning circle
    3. An underground sea mountain 7 miles tall

For this next question I’m going to use yet another search engine!!! I’ll try out ixquick this time. I’m going to use this one because I heard that it doesn’t track your searches and I want to see if that’s true. Also, I’m going to try and find a website with a different ending other than .com. I have absolutely no idea what the answer is to this question. My keywords for this search are going to be: Northern, Pacific, Gyre. I noticed that ixquick doesn’t show how many websites have come up in the search like Google. I scrolled through the results, and found a .org website: http://education.nationalgeographic.org/encyclopedia/great-pacific-garbage-patch/ Reading through, I found my answer: The Northern Pacific Gyre consists of a giant swirling mass of trash, mostly plastic because it cannot break down and disintegrate. That concludes that the answer is B: A giant debris field of garbage trapped in a spinning circle.

  1. This year (in 2010)  a mosaic of an angel was discovered under the floor of the Hagia Sophia.  Where and what is the Hagia Sophia?

    1. Istanbul, Turkey.  It’s a museum that previously was a Byzantine Christian Church and a mosque.
    2. Luxembourg.  It’s a cathedral built to honor St. Sophia, the country’s patron saint.
    3. Mexico City.  It’s a traditional market where the image of the angel is said to have healing powers.

For number 5, we’re going to do this one very, very, very, very differently. We are going to use 4 different search engines, and compare the results. I still don’t know the answer for this question. I think that maybe the answer is B. I don’t know though, so I have to search it on some engines! My keywords for this search are going to be: Hagia, Sophia, location. Google and Ixquick gave me the same first two links. Webcrawler gave me the same Wikipedia link, but not the same hagiasophia.com one. For Dogpile.com, it had completely different links. You can see in the screen captures below. I decided to use a link from ixquick. I liked ixquick’s result best. It gave me many .org sites, and multiple links for hagiasophia.com. Many of the links lead to sites that you could book tours or hotels on. I chose to use this link: http://www.hagiasophia.com/listingview.php?listingID=1 I found that the correct answer is A: Hagia Sophia is in Istanbul, Turkey, and it’s a museum that was previously a church and a mosque.

  1. If you want to go whitewater rafting on the Kampar River, where do you have to go?

    1. Wheeling, West Virginia.
    2. Gopeng, Malaysia
    3. Johannesburg, South Africa

We are going to use Google as a search engine. It’s going to be different because we’re going to do an advanced search… to limit the domain results. Maybe we’ll be able to find a .net or .edu or .gov site. The search terms that I’m going to use are: Kampar River and I also added Malaysia. I tried using a site:*.edu to see if it would actually come up with just edu sites. It did!!!! 1,420 results came up, all just edu sites. At first I just searched Kampar River, but I couldn’t find the answer on any of the links. So then I tried adding Malaysia, and I found the answer in this link: http://www.riverbug.asia/perak/whitewater-rafting-kampar-river The correct answer is: B: Gopeng, Malaysia.

I’m really happy that Mr. Woolner showed me how to search for a certain domain, because it made it so much easier when it came to finding an edu site.

  1. Most tourists love Devonshire cream tea – scones, clotted cream and raspberry jam with tea.  But where in England is Devonshire?

    1. In dairy country east of London
    2. Southwest England
    3. Near the Scottish border

For this question I am going to use duckduckgo. Once again, I’m going to use the trick to find a certain domain. This time, I’m going to try to find a .org site. My keywords for this search are going to be: Devonshire, location. I honestly don’t know the answer to this question. I just know that it’s somewhere in England, of course! It didn’t show me the amount of links that showed up. Also, when I tried to do the site:*org it made me take the . and the asterisk out. I chose the second link on the page, because it was the only link that wasn’t wikitravel or wikepedia. https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Devon,_England_Genealogy On this link, I found the answer for this question! The answer is: B: Southwest England.

  1. What and where are the Adirondacks?

    1. The Amish region in Indiana where craftsmen make chairs
    2. Mountain range in New York state
    3. American Indian reservations in the Florida Everglades

This question I am going to use bing again. I still am going to do the domain trick, because Mr. Woolner required it, and it’s also kind of cool. So, I’m going to look for specifically .com sites this time. My search words for this search are going to be: Adirondacks, location. 2,690,000 results came up, and I instantly chose this link: http://www.adirondacksonlocation.com/index.html Right in the little snippet I saw the answer: The Adirondacks are in the mountain range of New York State! I already knew this answer, because I once had a friend that always whet to an island that they owned and camped there ever summer in the Adirondacks. So with the help of this website I made sure that my answer was correct: B: Mountain range in New York state.

  1. Most people just call the region the Caribbean, but what is its formal name?

    1. The West Indies
    2. The East Indies
    3. The South Indies

The search engine that I’m going to use for this question is dogpile.com. I’m going to try to limit my searches to .gov this time. The keywords for this search are going to be: Caribbean, indies, america.  Oh wow!!! The site trick doesn’t work on this search engine. In that case, I’m going to switch over to duckduckgo.com because I know that the trick for finding a domain works on it. I found a link with the correct answer only two links down: https://www.loc.gov/item/74693455  It came up with a map covering the top part of the page showing part of Florida, and the states along that east west seacoast, along with the islands of the Caribbean. In a paragraph below, it explained some facts, and, the answer to this question!!! The correct answer is: A: The West Indies.

  1. Almost all tourists who visit the Galapagos Islands leave for their trip from what city?

    1. Quito, Ecuador
    2. Santiago, Chile
    3. La Paz, Bolivia

This is probably the last question that I’ll be able to do. I’ll use bing one last time for this question. For the domain, I’ll search for, .com sites. My search terms that I’m going to enter are going to be: Galapagos tourists traveling. 189,000,000 results came up for a site. I found a site after my search about 5 links down: https://www.audleytravel.com/us/the-galapagos-islands?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=26-505%20Galapagos%20Islands&utm_term=%2Btravel%20to%20%2Bgalapagos&audcmp=26-505%20Galapagos%20Islands It’s super long!!! With the help of that website, I found the answer to this question. The answer is: A: Quito, Ecuador. Actually, I’m going to mention that this website said Guayaquil, Ecuador. I still chose Quito, Ecuador because Guayaquil is in Ecuador, too.

  1. What was the United States’ first national park?

    1. Great Smoky Mountain
    2. Yellowstone
    3. Yosemite

I am going to skip this one because it’s so easy!!! I know the answer: It’s B: Yellowstone!

  1. Of Hawaii’s six major islands, which is the smallest and least developed?

    1. Lili’uokalani
    2. Kauai
    3. Lanai

I am going to use the search engine ixquick.com for this question. Oh, never mind. The timer ran out…
