Sub-title- A Project About “Searching” for the Correct Information.
Name: Emma C.
Date: March 11 – 21, 2016
Color Group: Blue 2
This is a quiz that was found in the Sunday, January 3, 2010 Concord Monitor newspaper…. Answers are there, too. You need to read the question, and… if you KNOW the correct answer, that’s good… but you must still VERIFY that correct answer. And write out your source for that correct answer. And, MOST importantly, I want to you also write out your thinking process- especially for the questions you do NOT know the answer to. Can you eliminate any of the answers? How? And how did you search for the correct answer? Did you search the QUESTION, or did you search the possible answers?
Write it out! Be complete. A good paragraph per answer is what we are after here…

1. What are the three places that make up the points of the Bermuda Triangle?
I am going to use the Google Search Engine to verify my answer. I used the search terms Bermuda, Triangle and Location. This is because Google is the first search engine that comes up on my browser. I believe the answer is c - Miami, Bermuda and Puerto Rico. I choose this because of my common knowledge. Mr. Woolner told us there was a specific name for the websites. The name is “snip-its”. There are many snip-it’s to choose from. I choose http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/bermudatri.html because it is a .gov website. Plus, .gov websites are usually pretty trusted.
I’m going to use the Bing Search Engine to verify my answer. I am using this search engine because it is also really popular like Google. For my search I used the key words Pernambuco, capital and location. I did an educated guess by my common knowledge. I have been to Italy, so I remember the cities. I believe that Pernambuco City is not there. Also I know a lot about Spain because I take the language of Spanish and in some of the different lessons that we have I also know of a curtain wood that is tropical. So I know the answer is c. Brazil. I scrolled through 1 page of snippets about this city. Also I got about 91,100,000 results of snippets. I used the website http://www.brazil.org.za/pernambuco.html because I like to like to use .org sites.
For a search engine I am going to use DuckDuckGo. I am going to use this one because I have never heard of it and it also sounds cool. For my search I used the keywords Nara, Japan. I noticed that as I was typing there were no answers popping up. Also, I have noticed that DuckDuckGo doesn’t track your searches like some other search engines. I found a site by looking at snippets and most of the snippets say the city was founded on the date of 710. So it looks like I will need to do some math. I found the answer and it looks like b. 1,300. I used the website of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nara,_Nara because Mr. Woolner says it is a good website to use.
For this question I am going to use Yahoo Search Engine. I am using this because I don’t really know why but I am running out of search engines and to some people it is a good browser to use. For my search I am using the key words Northern, Pacific, and Gyre. In this search I got 158,000 results. All of these results are snippets. I think it is b. a giant debris field of garbage trapped in a spinning circle. I was looking through all the snippets to find a good website I could use to verify my answer. To verify my answer I used the Noaa.gov website. I used http://marinedebris.noaa.gov/info/patch.html because .gov websites are usually trusted. When I checked the site it said that there was a giant debris field trapped continuously spinning in a circle. Therefore I was right.
For this one I am going to use four search engines and compare them. They are Yahoo, Google, Bing, and Dogpile. I am doing this because I would like to see the differences in between the search engines. Before I check though I am going to guess an answer. My answer is a. Istanbul Turkey. Also I used the keywords Hagia, Sophia, and Location. When I was typing in all some of my key words. Also I think that Bing, Yahoo, and Google are keeping track of my searches because all three of my keywords showed up. In each of the search engines I found the answer and all of the snippets said that it was located in Istanbul, Turkey. In Google I had about 807,000 results. So I have to look at all of the snippets. I choose this link because I think it pretty accurate: http://www.wow.com/wiki/Hagia_Sophia and also because .com websites.
For this question I am going to use Google Search Engine. I am going to use this search engine because I am going to try an advanced search. My key words are Kampar and River. For my advance search I used :*.gov because .gov sites are trusted. I couldn’t find the answer so I tried .com and I got 172,000 results. I found the answer and used this link http://www.bonosurf.com/en/kampar-river-indonesia-surf.html because it looked trusted so I used it. I believe the answer is b. Gopeng, Malaysia.
I am going to use Ixquick Search Engine. I am using this because I just got introduced to it today. My key words are Devonshire and England. But the only problem is the first couple links are for things like Senor Living and Amazon links to buy things but I kept looking through all the snippets and found the link. I choose this link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devon because Mr. Woolner thinks it is a good first website to look at. So I believe that the answer to this question is b. Southwest England.
I am going to use DogPile because I have never just only heard of it a week ago (as of March 21, 2016). I am going to use the keywords Adirondacks and location. I am going to make an educated guess that it is in a mountain New York because before my grandfather moved to New Hampshire he live in the Adirondacks. When I was searching I had words coming up. But in DogPile even with the keyword Location it still only came up with banks and vacation plans. So I am going to use Google to try and find the answer. So I know that many people don’t approve of Wikipedia but I chose this snippet https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adirondack_Mountains because Mr. Woolner (Geography teacher) likes to use this website. Plus I was right, the answer is b. Mountain Range in New York State.
So for this question I am going to use Bing as a Search Engine because it is a very popular Search
Engine to use. But before I look the answer up I believe that the answer is The West Indies. I am going to use the keywords West and Indies. I used didn’t use a Bing map for it because maps are good for location and I used this link here for my answer https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caribbean because it says the answer in it and many people think it is trustable. The answer is a. The West Indies.
For this answer I am going to use the Search Engine
